My tranny temp light is stuck on, even when started cold so I want to reset the computer and see if it goes away. What's the proper procedure? Do I have to disconnect the positive leads on both batteries and does anyone know for how long? Thanks

There's no computer monitoring a 1991 Starwagon, it's mechanical.

The A/T light is monitored electrically (sensor), not mechanically as the member above said.
You cannot reset it. It has to be replaced.
Before you do, make sure the fluid is a red/pinkish color and does not smell burnt. Have a shop do a drain and check the filter/pan for metal shavings. If there are any and/or the fluid smells burnt, then the transmission may require extensive work ~ rare case with auto's unless neglected.
If it's just the sensor, it's an easy re&re.
Reasons why the light will come on and stay on:
-Transmission fluid requires changing
-Electrical problem in the wiring for the transmission sys. Sensor wire may have popped off or become corroded.
-The A/T sensor could be faulty
-Fan on the transmission cooler at the drivers side front wheel is not working
