Yet another cold start thread

Just looking for the delica.ca community to provide some suggestions as to why my idle drags (for lack of a better word) after I start. A friend of mine suggested I might have a glow plug out but I have tested all of them and they are working fine, actually I'd go as far as they are working perfectly. My theory is that my gp ecu isn't functioning properly. I had work done on it in the summer ago after it stopped working completely. I'm thinking it fires up the gp's initially but fails to stay on after it has started. But I don't know, I'll entertain any suggestion at this point. Here is a video to illustrate what i'm talking about:

Edit: oh man, sorry for the quality of the video. Just watched it myself. Hopefully it puts my point across though.

do you have a pre-93 L300 with a manual throttle push/pull control? If so, give it a yank to bump the rpm's up to 1-1,200 while warming up.

If you have a post-93 L300 without the throttle control, then have the ECU tested. It is no different than a NA vehicle ECU's and can normally be serviced at a good service shop or they should be able to recommend another who can.

I have a Pre-93 w/ a throttle cable. I yanked on it closer to the end of the video and is what I have been doing on colder mornings. If that is what I should be doing and has no ill effect to my van, awesome!

Looks perfectly normal to me, don't know if it's just the video but I can see your lights dimming and hear clicking as if your GP's are being activated just fine. Just make sure your warm idle is set to 750'ish and let the engine warm up. If you have a manual throttle, use it to set the RPM to 1000 for a few minutes. If you don't have one, just do what you did and bring the RPM up using the pedal. I don't like the RPM's higher that 1200 during the warm up phase especially during cold weather starts, you just need enough RPM to get it running smooth and hold it there until it smooths out at idle.

Damn, Jesse beat me to it.

Correct me if i'm wrong but there is only one idle adjustment screw on the l300? I thought it was just the Pajero and l400 that had cold and warm adjustments. Could somebody perhaps describe to me and/or label what I should be adjusting. Here is an image:

Hi,
Your starting/rpm is almost normal.
Would recommend to mix water in the coolant and/or replace thermostat for fast warm up before adjusting anything.

See that 8mm bolt with a 10mm nut sticking out facing the front? That's your idle position. Loosen the 10mm lock nut and turn the 8mm bolt to suit.

Clockwise - higher rpm idle
Counter clockwise - lower rpm idle

Once your Delica has warmed up, check your idle. It should sit at 750. If it's not, adjust as per above and then tighten the 10mm lock nut once you're done.

Off topic, the thermostat and coolant/water mix is not related to rpm idle at startup.

Thanks man. I'm sure you've been told this before but you're a priceless resource on the forum! Your technical information is gospel to a newb like me.

Props go to the genuine resources aka. 'delica-tech mech's' like Butch, Edwin and Glen, mixed together with the delica knowledge of the canada pioneers like Mardy, Noel and Sabir. These bunch have had their mitts deep in Delica's for a long time and haven't strayed off course both in business and ethics. Guys like me just pass on the wealth via this forum and hand to hand mechanical beer fun parties. It's all good. Cheers :M

While i'm in there probably going to fine tune the AC idle up mechanism (it works as it should but it is not making contact with the throttle). I can more less see how it works.

How much should it boost the idle, +150?

.. and thank you as well! Wasn't sure how much I should actually be rev'ing to warm the van up. 1000-1200 I will do from now on! Can't wait to adjust my idle, it has been bugging me for a while.

Loving this forum.

If the van smokes at start I find that if I rev it up to 1500 for a couple seconds and then back down to 1000-1200 it doesn't take quite as long to start running smoothly. Then again cleaning the injectors would probably be the more permanent solution. :-D
