Delicat's new WVO gas station

Well, not so new anymore but I haven't had a chance to post it before so new to most... :-D

I found two of those 700L holding tank with drain pipes at the bottom and filler openings at the top, makes it way easier to clean all the water or crude that might accumulate over the months. Also makes it very easy to fill up cubbies for road trips...

I basically use one as a holding tank where I fill it up and let it rest for a month or so. Then I use my pump to transfer the oil from the top of that tank into the cold up flow tanks (into 60L smaller one sitting on top of the 200L one). It takes about 24hrs to filter it's way into another 60L tank via gravity. Ideally it would transfer right away into the next 700L tank but gravity doesn't work uphill so it goes in that smaller and lower one first (on the way there it goes through a 30u filter typically used in house water filtration system.

On the picture you can see I used a sock filter before the cold up flow but I got rid of it this winter as they plug faster and with it was getting redundant and not really useful as I drain the bottom 10L of my 200L tank every once in a while via another valve I mounted at the bottom of the plastic drum...

Next I pump the oil from that lower 60L plastic tank into the "ready to use" 700L tank but again, before making it into that large drum it goes through a 10u hydraulic filter.

Now I can either use the drain valve to fill up cubbies or my fuel nozzle to fill up the truck directly.

Best part with this system is that I don't have to move anything, I just open and close valves to control where the oil goes. This avoid numerous spills! (although I still managed some pretty decent ones! )

Now that winter has come I wrap a battery blanket around my 10u filter to help with filtration. I'm also about to experiment with pipe heater (house stuff to avoid your water pipes from freezing) instead of the battery blanket.

But to make it work best I'm looking for a 70L steel drum to replace my plastic one. I use a magnet oil pan heater that I mount under the drum to heat up the oil just a bit so that it moves more easily... Anyone knows where I can find one of those by any chance?

wow, that is a lot of processing. pretty cool. i would love to get one of those holding tanks.

beats my setup: get oil in cube, let it sit and settle for 2 weeks, 100 micron (sometimes 150 micron) filter into truck for 50% mix and let the truck 10micron filter do the rest.

DeliCat, that is pretty crucial, and much more practical than at your last place. Kind of reminds me of the fuelling stations in the toolies.

Nope, don't use motor oil. Tried it once and way too messy. Plus I tested it by mixing new engine oil (left over from previous bike) with wvo and after a few months I wasn't happy of what I saw (obvious separation, thick at the bottom...)

rezdiver, it would be nice if you could at the least filter down to 70u. That's what I consider bare minimum but that's just me... Well, as long as you know for sure you don't have water it should be fine.

So far this has been so much easier to work with. By letting 700L of dirty oil settle for a month or so, sucking from the top (just push my pick up hose down as the drum empties out) I already have pretty clean oil. With all the valves (always use two at same time, one for directing where I'm pulling the oil from and one to direct where I push the oil to) it allows me not to have to move my wand around. The only time I need to use the wand now is when I pull the oil from the cubbies and into the large "dirty" holding tank...

Also, I have a 400u at the end of the wand so that already blocks all the bigger stuff and I have a cleanable 70u stainless steel filter just before the pump to protect it. I think I'm covered! 8-)

i dont move anything either except the cubies. ive move away from filters in the system, even heated filters will plug if the incoming oil is cold. i pour through a 400u screen and pump to settling tanks (1000l) then pressurize the 1000l tank to move the oil up to the gravity feed tank then to the centrifuge. this time of year its just too cold to filter, but i usually have a hydraulic filter on the fill-up pump.

how much $$ do you think you have invested in this set up?

you are right, i should filter to a finer micron rating but i figured either i spend money on a filter in the garage or spend the money replacing the filter in the vehicle. I am pretty lucky with my source, very clean oil, paper filtered by them coming out of the fryer, and at my request they let the oil sit at high heat for at least an hour or more after they have finished with it prior to draining. and they drain straight into my tank i provided. so its not too bad of shape, i had a jug sitting outside when the temps dropped below zero and nothing solidified and canola oil was nice and fluid.
of course after all this, my Iltis engine is a sacrificial test subject..would not do this with the delica.

I will try and pick up a finer micron stainless filter, my 100 micron is also reusable stainless.

where did you get your 70 micron reusable filter?

i would still love to have the room for a setup like yours.

Reza

Nice Set up!

I was wondering what would be the max low temperature that you can run WVO, thought about it, but living in PG I could probably only run it in the summer right??, or is there something new out there?

People run on wvo even at -30, -40*, it just takes a bit longer before you can switch from diesel to wvo...

As for how much for this bad boy?
I paid $150 for each 700L drums with stands and draining valves at the bottom.
The pump is a about 4-5 yrs old now but at the time, motor, pump, 70u filter and a few extra goodies cost me around $600.
It has paid itself a long time ago...
The rest are hoses and connectors, maybe another $100.

I'll post back shortly with pics of the drum stands....

And a few more pictures.

I picked up these babies from a garage going out of business, they were originally for engine and tranny oil.

Drain pipe.

Great to drain the dirtiest oil from the bottom or to fill cubbies with clean oil.

And the temporary holding tank before the oil gets filtered via the 10u filter and up into the big clean tank.
