Dead then Alive Temperature guage

I have a 1990 P04W. The temperature gauge was working when I shut it off, then it was not working for 3 or 4 days, after that it started working again. I checked the sensor by shorting the wire that connects to the sensor to ground (lower resistance) and the gauge did not move at all.
Since the circut to the dash temperature gauge is simple, I suspect that there is a problem with the connectors, wire, or the gauge in the dash.
Has anyone else had this problem? Was there a particular area in the harness that I should look at?
