Whatever model/brand you get, get one that is powered, don't get the kind that simply leech a signal from the turn signals. When the unit fails (and they invariably do), those kind will drag down you whole electric system, producing all sorts of weird and wacky faults. The powered ones, when they die (and they tend to last WAAAAAAAAYYYYYY longer than the crappy kind), they just die and don't affect the remainder of the circuit which they were tied into.

is it a 4 way or a five way I need, further research has left me confused? I just read a post on here about a 4->5 way adapter or something?

Don't get one of these:
http://www.princessauto.com/trailer/tra ... -converter
Instead, get something like this:
http://www.thehitchstore.com/3-to-2-wir ... -1708.html
You need one that converts our three signal system (turn, brake, park) to a two signal system (turn/brake, park). And as I typed previously, get the powered one, not one that draws power only from the signal light.

Our van came with wiring installed, is there an easy way to tell if it is "powered" or not?

If there's a fused wire going to the battery.

When I had my L300 I put a Crappy tire trailer harness in it and it took out my head lights and brake lights in short order.
Switched to a powered setup (from Lordco sorry no part no) and all was fine.
With a non powered setup my turn signal flasher flashed at double time because of the extra lights the system was trying to power.

Gentlemen,
I have been using the PA hookups for years and never had any issues with any of the vehicles that I installed them on including a 92 Shogun and a 92 LWB Pajero. You can dra from your lighting sysytem just install a fuse holder in line to each wire between the converter box and the vehicle wiring your tying into. Ya it sounds tedious but I have never had an issue and its a few bucks for peace of mind.
