Hi guys great forum, over the next 6 months this vehicle will be tested on some very rough logging roads.
I hope i'm not dissapointed in it's reliability and durability that being said I do not and will not beat the crap out of it.
I will not drive this any harder than my 2007 Chevy Duramax.
I did put new 10 ply tires on it so if anyone is looking for new rubber and rims I will let them go cheap.
Question........ cold starts... I started it this morning 10degrees out, and walked away for a minute or two and it was flooding it self, almost staling
and smoking like crazy, had a big black spot on my driveway.....definately running rich
start up RPM seems to be about 400 ( seems real low)after it is warm it is about 900.....do I have a choke problem?

Thats the same with me. I just use the throttle control to raise RPM's until it is warmed up. I have had the glow plugs checked and run an injector cleaning solution through it but that didn't help much. Putting in a bigger exhaust and blanking the EGR helped a bit too. It's working fine apart from that though so until it becomes a big issue I'm just going to leave it. Maybe get the injectors cleaned if it gets too much worse.
(I too have left black spots but on my parents white picket fence)
Hope this helps, there are lots of threads on this problem and I'm sure others will start spouting off potential problems and things to check.
PS. Mine is a starwagon so not exactly the same machine

There's a meet at CVI on the 18th, turn up and you will meet a lot of knowledgeable people there and eat, too.

Welcome to the club!
I am sure you will find your bus to be quite capable in the situations you are going to put her through.
You shouldn't have any starting issues at that temperature. Your warm idle is definitely high and your cold 'idle' is definitely low. With the current temps outside, colder here in Calgary in the mornings right now, my bus starts and idles smooth at about 750 rpm then when warm drops to 450 to 500 I believe. It sounds as though you may have too much fuel going into the motor when it's cold thus causing it to chug and smoke then idle high once it warms up. That said, there could be the underlying problem of a weak or dead glow plug not lighting one cylinder. Could be a combination of both as well. Check to make sure your glow plugs are all working as they should. Your idle is still high though so you should have that looked at - that may solve it for you.
Cheers!
Ian

Is your a GAS or DIESEL model ?
If diesel, the person/dealer you bought it from. Did they replace the glowplugs and the injection pump main seal ? If not, those two are likely culprits to your description of starting.

Driving into Snug Cove this morning, I was thinking about the cold start issue, and if I give it a little gas It seems to be missing on one or two cylinders,
so I was thinking exactly what some of you have mentioned, Glow plugs. makes senses, once it warms up it runs and idles fine.
My trip in and out was good, the Delica performed great, you can not beat a Diesel for low end torque, it just climbed up the mountain on loose shot rock and shale like nothing, with not a bad ride to boot. I am think of replacing the shocks, I`m sure after 97k there probably a little worn, any recommendations.
I sure wish it had a overdrive and cruise.
