Propane injection & Bypass oil filter

Hi all, this weekend (hopefully) I'll be installing a propane injection kit and bypass oil filter. I'lll take some pictures and notes for anyone wanting to do the same.

thanks fexlboi, I was partly inspired to do these mods by your own efforts... I'm a little bit weary about the propane injection - I hope it all goes well and is worth the effort.

If you can afford the cost of a well built propane injection kit, then you will reap the benefits of a big increase in fuel economy (2-4L/100km more) and power (15-30 hp) if done right.

I will be doing it on the Safari at some point in his life.

Is this from personal experience? I've heard lots of numbers about improved power/mileage, but I dont think ive actually every talk to someone who has a PI installation...

From what I've read the horsepower increase is a definite, but the fuel economy is a bit of red herring: what you're saving in diesel, you're paying for in propane.

There is a discussion on propane injection somewhere. I'll post what I said then.

A friend of mine has an 80 series Landcruiser with the 4.2L 6cyl turbo diesel and it's been converted to propane injection. He got an increase of 4.5L per 100 km's and roughly 48 horsepower increase.

After that, his dad did the same to his Toyota Hilux with the 3.0L diesel, similar to the L300's 2.5 and he got about the same results.

John with the 80 goes through a 20lb propane tank in 4 95L diesel fill ups. His dad goes through a 5lb propane tank in 7 60L diesel fills.

On a Delica you'll get about 100km's on 7L of diesel with propane injection if you drive conservatively and more horsepower.

A 5 lbs propane tank (refillable) is cheap and will last 6-7 full tanks.

You save in both the short run (immediate gains) and the long run (fuel economy saved).

Frankly surprised there isn't many people doing it.

It's crazy popular in the US with the big diesels and in Europe.

Wayne at Luxury Imports did the two I know of.
What is Propane Injection?

Propane Injection is where Propane vapor is introduced into the intake of the diesel engine to help burn the wasted fuel. it acts like a catalyst with the diesel to help burn the fuel completely.

What are the advantages of Propane Injection?

Propane Injection (PI) helps to burn all the fuel thus you have a cleaner burning engine. a normal diesel engine only burns 75% of the fuel so there is a waste of fuel as well this is were most of the black smoke comes from, unburnt fuel. will this system get rid of all the black smoke? No. but it helps to reduce most of it. under full throttle you might still see a small amount of smoke. there are other factors that also come into play causing black smoke from a diesel. PI also drops the Exhaust Gas Temperatures by 50 F - 100 F. this also helps the longevity of the engine. PI also boosts the horse power of the engine by at least 25% but not at the risk of detrimental engine wear. the horse power increase is substantial making hill climbs a breeze and towing a reality and a pleasure. even around the city and on the highway you will notice a quieter more powerful engine. Because the engine runs cleaner you will also find a side benefit of a bit cleaner oil at oil changes. PI will also increase the fuel mileage of the engine by 1-3 mpg (or even more) depending on driving style.

Will Propane Injection hurt my engine?

No, as long as you leave the settings as they are at time of install. the PI injects 2 cfm of propane into the engine to help burn the unburned and wasted fuel. We are not trying to run the truck on Propane just introducing a very small quantity to help combustion.

How long does a tank of Propane last?

This depends on driving style. on the smaller 2.4L a green camping bottle should last 4 tanks of fuel. on the bigger 4L-4.2L a 20 lb bottle of propane should last 4 tanks of fuel.

How does this Propane Injection system compare to systems like that from Bully Dog and other manufacturers?

Last I remember a full kit is around $600.

You save roughly 20-25% in fuel savings (dollar value) with propane injection that is including the cost of diesel and propane together when filling up.

It wouldn't take long to pay off the initial cost of the kit.

Plus you're getting a cooler running engine/head and 25-30% increase in horse power which is huge on a Delica.

It was $300... It claims to be progressive. There is a way to manually adjust the propane flow, and the venturi valve actively regulates propane flow. The valve is inserted pre turbo - my guess is that as the turbo revs up and creates more suction on the pre turbo side it allows more propane to flow into the engine. The nice thing about this set up is its relatively simple to install the venturi valve into the pre turbo air hose. I know more expensive systems have boost piloted valves to regulate the propane flow. I suppose this is the same thing done in a simpler way.

Where im stuck right now is how to splice the coolant line - coolant must flow through the propane regulator to keep it from freezing - rad hoses coming and going to the engine are way too big and Im not sure what the other hoses going into and out of the rad are exactly for? Air conditioning?

went hydrogen instead of propane, same idea over all...... just installed a kit couple days ago, hopefully finish up in a couple weeks, hard to squeeze time. Initial pics next weekend hopefully.

I talked with an older couple the other week in Jasper and they were telling us about the HOH system for diesel engines. He had only good words about it.
That said, reading about the propane system, I was wandering. Couldnt find any topics here about the HOH system and now just found out about the propane...

I guess I'll start doing some research on the web about this... cost, installation, benefits, etc...
