I have burned through two sets of plugs in two years. Choking and white smoke is the morning start and I can only suspect I need new plugs yet again.

Any suggestions? I suppose my mechanic is putting in cheap plugs? I can't imagine it is normal to replace plugs every year!

I have a '93 Pajero with the 2.8 in it.

I am importing/selling 11V Hyundai glow plugs at $140 ( 1 box ).
I would say Hyundai glow plugs are worth to get.
I bet you will be satisfied with its result.

Hi there, no its not normal. If you run genuine MIstubishi OEM, and everything else is fine, then they should last a few years. I wrote a huge essay on troubleshooting in reply to "norther ontario - cold/no start" in General Discussion (if you click on "recent topics" you will see it there). Go thru each item, to find what is causing your premature burnout. Also, if you use a remote start (not a good thing) ensure your timing for it matches the time it takes your glow plugs (ie should be 7 to 9 sections depending on weather) and most remotes default to 15 seconds , bad bad. The only other comment I would say is make sure you are putting the correct OEM glow plugs into the Pajero.

Depending on the month/year of your manufacturer, there can be a different relay system and different voltage/current characteristics. The problem MAY be that you have had the wrong type of glow plugs in all along. I personally am using NGK glow plugs, and I can get my rig started in -20 (Ottawa) with no problems. However the NGK ones I have match the electric specs for my relay system.

NGK makes more than one glow plug that "fits"........... think they were CY 05 and CY 55, I have a set of CY55s coming in soon after TONNES of good comments from delica UK site as well as others on delica.ca if you search around.

Most glow plug systems for our "vintage" of vehicles do not have that lengthy 2-3 post start burn (strictly for emissions), and so consequently there are lots of glow plugs that will fit the profile but are not designed to handle that long of a burn time. The old school rule, so to speak, more than 45 sec or so of burn time and you are going to fry the plug......... like when people would cycle the key 2-3 times before a start to heat it up more.

So far, from what I have read (lots, but do your own research), the Mits OEMs and the CY55 are the only ones that are designed to handle the horrific post burn. Sorry, no comment on the Hyundai, not much on them out there. Some say that the NGK CY55 "IS" the mits OEM....... dunno

Bottom line, as mentioned throughout many glow plug posts, there are 4m40s all over the place, there are lots of glow plugs out there that are not capable of withstanding the afterglow system that the L400 Delica has put in place. Another post had mentioned about worrying about the ECU and its specs more than the vehicle model/year etc......... not a bad thought.

One option, is to stay with the "cheap" plugs, which will work fine for the start but will eventually burn out (quickly) during that post burn cycle. Wire in a "kill" switch ($10switch + $10relay), to stop the post burn on the plugs and carry on with life. This will not affect any of the starting or ECU, timing etc, just gives you the option to turn them off after you have started, the post burn is FOR EMISSIONS ONLY (sorry to the enviro).

The how to is easy: small wire (control from ECU) at your glow plug relay, run to the NC(normally closed) contact of a newly installed relay. Other contact of the NC(normally closed) from newly installed relay, run to where you disconnect "small wire" listed above. Run 12V (+fuse [10A] is appropriate for the wire sizes in question - I use 18gauge, 20 would be fine) to one side of the coil of the newly installed relay. Other side of coil, run to your new switch (through NO [normally open]) contacts and finally run it to ground. When you select the switch, you will end the signal from ECU to the glow plug relay, shutting off the glow plugs.

If there is interest, I will post more detail with pictures........... I will actually be installing a SPDT switch, so that I have: 1- Normal operation (fully ECU control), 2-momentary manual on, 3-"kill" for the post burn. Not a bad idea to turn them off early even for the "good" plugs as this will increase their life regardless and will have absolutely no effect on ECU or temp sensor etc.

Let me know if peeps are interested in write up and pics, I can probably do this before I receive new plugs...........

If you over burn a plug and the tip falls off inside the motor $500. OEM plugs will seem like a deal!!!

I have not seen the Bosch plugs for sale here but at least this gives and idea of what plugs are the right ones by cross referencing the part numbers!!

I will post this in this thread again...gives Bosch numbers but more importantly the specs for different systems
