The L400 does pull in more fuel than it needs generally, the fuel return returns diesel back to the main tank.
Any more symptoms? Smoke? It sounds like the fuel pump is not pumping enough diesel, but that is a guess. If you really try revving the engine, does it die?

Check all of your fuel lines from the tank to the filter to the injection pump to to the injectors.
The only way to trace air is to physically run along the lines or disconnect and run compressed air.

fitted another fuel filter housing but still the same, but i did notice while manually pumping fuel up by button on top of fuel filter, the fuel is going into the pump coming back through the return pipe back to the tank,i dont think that is meant to happen,

Hi,
Did you get your issue resolved? Just curious as my van has similar symptoms although it only occurs when its cold and the van is not warm. It happens at about 1.5-2km from home on a cold day. But it only happens the once when the van is not warmed up yet.
So that means it should be somewhere that a seal is shrinking with the cold but then when warmed up seals again....maybe?

These guys are working on the same issue.

This seems better:
problem solved. yahoo! apparently there's a small gauze filter inside the stop solenoid on the fuel return. yip,it was blocked.no fuel return to tank from pump. hats off to my dad. 74 years old 50 yrs as a diesel plant and forklift fitter.
komatsu use the same on their pumps. there's also 4 small 0.6 mm holes around the solenoid where it fits into the banjo.
so, all new fuel lines, new filter, tank drained and cleaned, particle filter removed from tank, and it was what he said in the beginning. see,no matter how old you are,you think you know more than your parents, common fault on forktucks. happy days, and thanks to all for your help:)

Another reminder about the amount of info on the uk site compared to here for the L400.

ive just taken off the return and feed that are attached to the pump, they both go to the same pipe, return and fuel from filter, but there is a solenoid which bolts the pipe to the pump,it has a 0 ring, rubber on it,it could be that or the solenoid, its not the fuel shut off,it has a hole in it,but really need some pics of the solenoid as it may have something missing,so if anyone has any pics, could they put links on here please,
