Hey Everyone,

Hoping for some help here, I have been recently been having alot of problems starting my 94 paj 2.8l in the morning it started when it was -20 so i thought well its just really cold. But now its been -1 and it takes a good minuite to 2 of solid cranking after cycling the glow plugs thorugh a few cycles to get it going. While cranking there is alot of black soot coming out so I guess its getting fuel....once started for the first time in a day it starts right away anytime after that even if its been sitting for 5hrs in -18.

Here is what I have done so far

1. Replaced all four glow plugs last fall, and worked fine after that
2. Tested and found I have 12v going to the buss bar
3. Fuel filter replaced in the fall aswell
4. 2 new batterys that crank strong even after 1 1/2mins for cranking in -20

Japanoid rebuilt my injection pump before I bought it a year and a helf, but that does not mean much

you just replace it... its only a 14 dollar seal but about 4 hours of labour. I assume japanoid would have replaced your seal when they rebuilt you ip so maybe its something else.

once started and warmed up, runs fine? pull and check glow plugs if you are getting your voltage at rail; type of glow plugs installed? We love pictures..............

You also cannot start a diesel without compression. Look for signs of a head gasket problem. (mixing of fluids or blow by where the oil goes in)

I think I will pull the glow plugs and check each one with a spare battery I have and make sure they glow. I replaced them with some with the brand name HKT CORP made in japan model CP05 Ref no. ME 201638, ME 200970 for the 4M40 Motor. If they are gone I think I will replace them with OEM ones and just pay the price. Worried about wearing the starter out cant be good for it to crank for well over a min straight.....

Thanks will post some pics soon, just found out how to so now I have some in my gallery on here. My pajero is by far the best vehicle I have ever driven on deep snow and ice, just seems to be well balanced. My Full sized dodge work van with a 5.9L motor is a different story! lol

The HKT glow plugs do not seem to be lasting very long in the 4M40 engines.
It sound like your's have failed and you are compression starting the engine.
Coombs Country Autos has stock of the NGK CY55 glow plugs and they have a good reputation overseas.

Hyundai 11V glow plugs work for your 4M40 engine very well in cold region.
We ( Rising Sun Auto Import ) and CVI have them in stock.

Let's try basic and go for next step.

My answer was assuming that the Glow plugs are working.

Clearly test glow plugs first.

So took out two of the glow plugs to test and found that one worked and the other one did not work at all, so I have ordered the hyundai plugs as the HKT ones only lasted 6months! not impressed.... so FYI do not use HKT Glow plugs
