Hi Everyone,

I have decided that I want to get some real Mitsubishi glowplugs. The cold weather starts without plug-in is not very good on my 94 L400, yet I read about some here that can start in -20 to -30 and that’s what I want also.

I have decided that I would systematically go through the things that I have heard will make the cold starts better.

So I HAVE DONE the following:

I had CC Auto replace the IP seal (along with much other stuff; new coolant system, front end work, etc)

I have a new AGM battery (single) with lots of CCA

I use 0w 40 synthetic oil (delvac)

I have modified the glow plug bar to get current to all plugs

I have 3 aftermarket German glow plugs and one old one, as one of the German ones broke (my fault for over tightening)

I have NOT done the injectors, but CC Auto tuned it after the IP seal replacement

I have decided that the higher cost of genuine glowplugs is well worth the money if they do the job for many years (hell I paid close to $100 for an oil change).

Anyway I have found three different parts numbers for the glowplugs.

4M40 V46 glow plug Mitsubishi part number:
Until Aug '94 ME200970
From Aug '94 to '96 ME203754

And from another place

ME201638/ NGKCY05, NO. ON THE PLUG IS, ( CY05/11V/2Z7A )

So, since my deli is from sometime in ‘94 I’m not sure which one is the right one.

I found the date 7/1994 on the seatbelt so that’s July 94, but is this really the date of manufacture? Is there another plate with the month of manufacture (I know of the one in the engine bay, driver side, but is there another one?)

How much difference could there be between these three glowplugs for the 4m40 engine?

I don't think I would go with the more expensive ones, I installed the Blue Print ones that Paul at Pacific JDM sells, and they work fine. I installed them in August of 09. My l400 also has 0W40 oil, and dual AGM's and it starts fine. Sunday morning, my webasto didn't turn on with the timer(its fuel filter needs changing)and I cycled the glow plugs twice and the van fired right up. It was -33C here that morning(-43C with wind chill) I was very happy with the quality and performance of the BluePrint glow plugs. I had heard they were of a lower quality, but mine still work fine after a year and a half, and I still have the stock aluminum bus bar. I'm sticking with BluePrint for good glowplugs to use in Manitoba winters.

What else can I do to get starts like yours? Will cleaning the injectors and getting a "CVI" tune-up make any difference?

I want to put in dual batteries and would need to make the battery tray bigger. Do you know if the mits dual battery tray will swap out for the single or is there more to it.

I've seen posts saying the CY05 is not the right one, but man the confusion over this topic is crazy. I really look to guys like you and Jason for correct info, so credibility for the CY05 has gone up again in my eyes.

I love my L400 and I've put 40K on it in just over a year. It has performed without fail in some terrible conditions. It is everything I could ask for in a vehicle... except I can't rely on it to start after a cold day touring from a high pass.

I would do anything to get it to start at -20 would be willing to do more to deal with -30 after a week at 1700 meters. Like getting a generator for pre-warming and recharging if need be (one reason I am leaning towards a generator rather than a Esbar as the generator has multi-uses while the esbar is just preheating, does nothing for a dead battery).

Anyway, anybody have ideas i'd love to hear them.

I did change the front seal on the injector pump of this l400 in Nov. 2010, as it would start, but stall immediately. It would then restart no problem. changing the seal fixed this. The injectors have been untouched. I imported this one with 102,000km in july of 09 and now have 150,000km on it. I brought my other l400 in in Dec. of 09, with 160,000km, and it will probably flip over to 200,000km this week. I have not touched the pump or injectors on this one, but I did update it to dual batteries, BluePrint glowplugs, and 0W40 oil. It also starts fine if needed. I went for the webasto's because I like the fact that they heat the engine to operating temp. so no warm up time is nessecarry. Also highly unlikely they will be stolen. You can also sleep in the vehicle and just run the heater fan to stay warm. The biggest reason for me, was that I am often on call with the fire dept. so I will leave the webasto on all night, if the pager goes off, I can turn the key and put the pedal to the floor with out worring about damaging the engine.

NGK CY55 is the part number for the 4M40.
Coombs Country has stock of them right now.
