Just some garbage from a corb lund song.
At least i'm no quoting convoy.... yet.
Got some static today, squelch has to be at absolute 0 to get anything. must really need a tuning...

Sounds like a dead short in your coax to me.... DO NOT transmit until you check it out or replace the coax. Make certain the outer ground shield is not touching the centre conductor at either end. Get a SWR meter and check for a low SWR (Standing Wave Ratio). Anything about 2 will probably destroy the radio and will certainly not transmit very far.

that's a little extreme... a dead short can certainly destroy your radio, but I'd hardly call 2 "critical", sure I don't LIKE SWRs above 2... but you're probably not too likely to fry anything at 2 either...
ideally though, yes, keep it well under 2... and ideally at 1...

sorry for about I meant above 2... and it wont destroy it immediately, but over time your finals will start to go downhill...

I have an old mobile Codan HF Radio (8528) , a leftover from my humanitarian years in Africa. Normally this would be paired with an Codan auto tuner (whip type) antennae, but I don`t have the antennae. Would I need to install some kind of `smart tuner` if I was to use a simple magnetic whip. How are these things tuned?

Perhaps I should have paid attention to this thread, but better late than never. You dont have to be albertan to recognize corb lund... I got a friend in the band (from when I lived in wpg).

haha awesome, corb is pretty awesome. Seem like pretty cool guys too. I'd love to see t hem some time. But to keep things on topic, it gives me cb phrases to mke me sound cooler on the radio haha.

it all depends... basically it's a matter of knowing what frequency you are operating on, if the frequency is constant (only one channel) or if all the frequencies you use are very close to each other, you can simply cut an antenna to the right length so as to resonate at the appropriate frequency. if however there is a huge range of frequencies an antenna tuner is preferred.
