I know it is standard practice on ships to do this. I am just curious ~ you may be on to something.

On ships the forward facing air inlets are for ventilation of the lower decks, not so much for intake of air to engines (for precisely the reason you described - too much water vapor is forced/sucked into the engines if it's damp out).
