based only on the fact they are right hand drive? do they randomly pull over LHD vehicles as well? or is this pure and simple discrimination?here will be more road side checks being carried out on right hand drive vehicles

According to Brain they are trying to address the vehicles that `slipped` through the inspection process and make sure they are bought up to current standards for road safety . I see vehicles here on the island all the time with no DRLs and Japanese headlamps that blind oncopming traffic . I think it is good they are trying to deal with the past mistakes .

but there are substantially more LHD vehicles with burnt out bulbs, mis-adjusted headlights, illegal after-market modifications, etc.
how often do you want your fully compliant vehicle pulled over just to "be sure" they didn't miss someone elses?
I have no problem with them pulling people over if they see a problem (obviously mis-adjusted lights, no DRL, missing brake light, burnt out bulbs, whatever) but if it just becomes a witch hunt where RHD owners can't seem to go anywhere without ridiculous delays at inspection stations then I can't possible support it.

Which hunt ?
I don`t think its a witch hunt its more a case of trying to re-inspect obviously flawed vehicles . I think it would be ridiculous to think of calling all 80,000 or so previously imported vehicles in for re-inspection just to check them . I sure don`t mind a few minutes out of my day to insure i am legal on the highway . Personally I think they should just introduce a yearly inspection as they have in the UK . That way we wouldn`t have to worry who is being `picked on` , LHD and RHD would all have the same treatment and some of the domestic crap that is driving around could be removed for good !!!!

that is something we both agree on (I'm not sure about yearly, but definitely "periodically", something that doesn't happen now)Personally I think they should just introduce a yearly inspection as they have in the UK
I suspect what will happen is that the roadside inspections will catch the same few people many times, and miss the majority, those they catch will most likely be compliant after the first time they get stopped, but will probably be stopped again anyway...
how long does a roadside inspection take? it takes an hour or more in the shop... I get cranky when I have to spend over an hour on the side of the road when pulled over for no specific reason other than that "some RHD vehicles" aren't compliant, even though mine is. (er... is in Alberta... probably not in BC... but that's an entirely different problem...)

Apparently they are only going to be checking headlights DRL and side markers . If anything appears wrong a re-inspection notice will be issued . If nothing wrong you`re on your way .... until next time !!! I was an MOT inspector in the UK and I have got to say the vehicles are a lot safer there than they ever will be here !!! Some of the cars we see in our shop that are basically ready to fall in half would have been taken off the road years ago in England . The JDM vehicles are the least of this countries highway concerns !!!!!

Coming to BC
Good question , not sure how they will deal with that ??? Wait until the 16th drive down to Vancouver and I`ll meet you for a coffee and if you got stopped tell me what they said !!! Seriously I was an inspector in Alberta for five years and side markers are a requirement . It is actually a Federal requirement as are all Canadian lighting regulations and have to comply to CMVSS parameters but just not often enforced correctly . It a bit like the high mount brake light thing (which also applies in Alberta), if you go digging far enough you will find the `actual` way to inspect correctly . If it is not simple most inspectors would just overlook it . Hopefully after May 15th the inspection manual in BC will have less grey areas .

well I now have side marker lights anyway, still missing the reflectors, but I plan to do that soon anyway... BUT I'm one of very few Albertans that will be compliant to BC standards... I seem to remember someone telling me that it's a waste of money to do any compliance stuff that the government of your province doesn't actually mandate... but I have a feeling it will make my life a lot easier on my many trips to BC...

delica taillights can already be seen from the side, and the front side turn signals are easily re-wired to also operate as front side markers (as I have done) this still however leaves the reflectors. but for about $3 each you can buy those and screw them on with very little extra work required
(or you can do as many have, and buy combination reflector/light and mount them, but it does require a little more work (I'm considering doing this in addition to what I've already done... we'll see))

basically you cut the ground wire going to the side signal light and instead connect it to the front marker light's power line (takes less than a foot of wire, and it's all open in behind the panel anyway) was an easy job, and now when the marker lights are on so is the side signal light, when you turn on the turn signals the light still flashes.
