YoJim and DJack good info!

I'm pretty sure I found the problem.

I missed a small, however crucial, step. After I got the belt on initially I didn't set the tension correctly. You're supposed to let the tensioner apply tension with it's spring, then turn the crankshaft clockwise so the cam gear reads 2 teeth ahead. THEN you tighten down the bolt on the oblong hole on the tensioner, then it's other bolt. Turn counter clockwise and check the marks. After that you give the whole thing 2 whole revolutions.

Did all that this morning. Runs like a charm. Ran to town and back, and she runs really fine... idles nice and good power.

I'll have to drive into town and back everyday for abit and keep an eye on everything before I trust it for the long drive to Winnipeg.

Awesome!!!!

I would put a new crank bolt in it in the near future and re-torque it after since the cranks pulleys are a known problem...

Happy dieseling....

So while I was atypin you were afixin? Heh, fairplay, glad shes good. Remember to take up the slack up after 20 or 30k. And as Jack says, new bolt, a little bit on the reasoning for that, and I'm not so sure about it myself, but, its a) a stretch bolt so should only be used once, b) the bolts are by default to close to bottoming out in the crank, so stretched ones often do, and new one somethimes do, and that new bolts are often cut down before being fitted. (b) came from a supposed mitsi mechanic. I fitted a new bolt, torqued to about 3/4 of the book, and loaded with threadlock.

As I type this, and realise how much I know about my silly Scooby Doo car, I wonder about the guy coming to view it tomorrow to buy it. I may have to backout of this, I havent driven her in 6 months, but I'm not so sure I can let her go...

Good info! I'll put an order in for a new big-ass bolt.. hate for that to let go after all of this! I think I found the special tool to set the IP timing as well.
What's the reasoning with only 3/4 the torque?

I totally understand how you feel about your van.. It's amazing how much knowledge you can gather when you constantly tinker with these suckers. My van literally has my blood, sweat and tears embedded in it.

3/4 torque was all my buddy could manage to lock the engine via the inspection plate on the flywheel ;-) I've owned her nearly longer than anyone else here by recollection. Its a hard decision...

Bit of thread drift, but he popped around and I have to admit I did an awful job of selling him it :? he's gone away thinking that a VW might be the answer for him :-D he's probably right, he came and looked at it because he likes the way it looks, not because of what it is...

Heh, seems so ;-) Its not a popular decision at the minute with the number of cars around the place... But I really have to fix it up before I even consider selling it really, and then of course I'll be driving it so then it will be being used and justifying its existence ;-)
