Re: 94 l400 bucking when cold
For what it's worth, I have run Lucas Engine Stop Leak with no ill effects, even at quite high concentrations (2, 1-quart bottles in ~1/4 tank of diesel), but in hindsight what seems to have the best effect is not necessarily the concentration, but the amount of time I have been running treated fuel.
I had what I suspect were leaky internal seals in my pump a couple of months ago, but it was overshadowed by having my cylinder head crack/head gasket let go at the same time - this was when I tried the heavy Stop Leak concentration as I thought my fuel pump might be on the way out. Since the head has been replaced, I had been noticing the rough starting more and more (done the usual glow plug tests, etc.)
To that end, I have been adding roughly 1/4 bottle (250 mL) to my tank at each fill up for the past 5 fillups, and I am noticing that my cold starting has gradually gotten better and better, even as the temperature has dipped down close to freezing here lately. It only adds about $3 per fillup, and if it saves a $900 pump overhaul, I figure it's money well spent.
So my advice is to go ahead and try it; just be patient.
Also, you might already know this but when cold starting, when you first turn the ignition on, wait for the first loud click (glow plug relay On) and wait some more for the second click (relay Off) before cranking. This will give the plugs maximum time to heat up. Ignore the little indicator light on the dash - it is useless.

Yep I will be trying it tonight. We'll see how it works. What brand do you use?

I went to Crappytire and they didn't have Lucas Stop leak for engines only power steering. They had Bardhal stop leak and Rislone rear main seal repair.. Any of these any good? Where did you find it Tony? It was way less rough this afternoon for some reason but it still stumbled a little bit. Any one meant to go in engine oil will be fine. I went with Lucas because it was cheapest.

Re: 94 l400 bucking when cold
Well I filled up the sink this morning with hot water and let the container of lucas stop leak sit in there for a while to warm up to have a little more fluidity. then I put about 1/2 of it into the tank that is at about 1/8-1/4 full. Any idea how long this may take to seal it back up if in fact this is my issue? I hope to dig into everything a little more this weekend when I have more time.
thanks

If it is seal related it should be a few days.ruggles wrote:Well I filled up the sink this morning with hot water and let the container of lucas stop leak sit in there for a while to warm up to have a little more fluidity. then I put about 1/2 of it into the tank that is at about 1/8-1/4 full. It has to get sucked up with the fuel and sit in the pump for a while - so that just happens from driving normally and letting it sit.

Have you verified your glow plug operation? Plenty of threads on here how to do it if you haven't yet.
Especially if the same cylinder feels like its the one missing all the time when cold.

Re: 94 l400 bucking when cold
Will it be better to put in the stop leak before filling up ? This way it will be well mixed, right? How do you usually do it, Tony?
