Good idea with generator, I will have a look at it.
We have Eberspacher Air heater/ just different brand than Webasto/ and it works great. It cost us £700 but it was a very good investment.
Our wan is in very good condition/ done just 60000km, we changed so many things before our trip just in case/, simply best Delica in UK

I would highly recommend the webasto coolant heater, I have one on my l400, and have installed many on heavy equipment that is used in northern Manitoba, where the temp. is similar to where you are heading.They use very little fuel, and have a very low amp draw on your battery. Also, with the timer it can be set to come on an hour or two before you wake up, and by that time the engine is at full operating temp. They are pricey, but well worth it in my opinion. Also, I have started my l400 (with no heat) as cold as -36C with no problems. I run 0W40 full synthetic engine oil (year round), and full synthetic transmission fluid and power steering fluid. I also have dual 1000cca AGM batteries. Heavy oil in the tranny and power steering can create considerable drag on an engine when trying to start it (especially in extreme cold)

Just to add to this...

Driving a 98 Series 2 Delica 4M40 around in -40C in Winterpeg and way more heat then the Series 1. Actually have to turn it down in the highway as too hot for winter gear. I suspect better control venting, cabin insulation and heater core. Much better then our 94 4M40.

I did notice though after a few days outside in this weather that power is down... Almost like no boost, could be gelling up in the filter. Will have to warm it up.

I am also from Winnipeg; planing to import 97-98 Delica Space Gear Diesel. Today is Jan 2 temp is -33C wind-chill -43C a few days ago was wind-chill -50C what I am asking can you guys give me advise how to prepare diesel Delica for Manitoba winter it will be daily use not Arctic expedition. My dealer in Japan is already looking for one but is really hard to find one under 100,000 km grade 4

Up here what i do on my L300 is synthetic oil 0W40 or 5W40, I have a block heater and battery heater as well. Also i have a winter front on the rad, (basically a crazy carpet in front of the rad. i can get it started in -42, it doesn't like it..... at all, but i can get it going. As far as the transmission i was going to put a heater pad on the pan, but never got around to it, so the trans is hating its life right now.

other things you can do are the espar or webasto coolant heater, i would strongly recommend this, if i knew for how long i would have my van for i would be installing one of these as well. also maybe look into a fuel filter heater, as well as all synthetic fluids in all of the components.

My van has been outside during this deep freeze and it starts just fine. All I have done is 0W40 full synthetic oil and have a block heater. I also take the long way to work and go for a good cruise down route 90. I found my Series 1 L400 did not warm up enough driving through the city. The block will warm up but it never gets warm inside idling in traffic. On the highway though it gets too warm and I have to turn the heat down and take my parka off. I have yet to put a winter front on it but if this cold weather keeps up I might.
