L400 starter gear rings

Post by Ender-Beeshi »

after a enduring a run of mis-starts on my l400 i finally brought it in to my mechanic to have the starter rebuilt.

the starter was fine but the gear-rings were totalled. ack.

any suggestions on how to proceed? seems like a big fix and a difficult part to source. . ..

looks like i need a "drive plate" / "flex plate".

any thoughts on whether i should be worried about installing a used part vs. ordering new from japan?

thanks.

The flexplate is what the torque converter bolts to and is turned by the starter.

DO NOT replace it with a used one.

Order a new one from Japan as shops will not warranty a used driveline part and you will be stuck with a 2nd heavy bill for a re&re when the used one goes.

The transmission has to be pulled to replace it and you can reuse the hex bolts. Just make sure if you're doing it to use 'blue' loctite and not red along with the correct torque spec. It's by far easier to replace it out of the vehicle but the firewall is tall enough to get the torque wrench and socket on without pulling the engine.

thanks for your great feedback jfarsang - just a quick question:

The hexbolts you're referring to are the flexplate mounting bolts? So I shouldn't need to order any bolts?
