Speed of a Pajero?

What is the speed of a 1996 Mitsubishi Pajero...

Is that a European Pajero or an African Pajero? (sorry, I couldn't resist)

Oh, common! It is REAL Japanese as I always tell my daughter, it is UNIQUE truck!
Did test drive, - 135 km/h on plain highway (stopped to accelerate to satisfy my wife's request)
Normally go 90 km/h on 5th gear up to the Grouse mountain. Then wait 10 minutes to cool down the turbo but who cares?!
Pajero is not a quick starter but unstoppable when up to speed, real pleasure to drive!

I'm inclined to think that your EGT's will be quite high at that speed uphill in 5th. What are you revving at?

Thanks for your concern, it was a short distance, - about 15 minutes without pit stop at traffic lights :)
Also I monitor oil temperature. It goes from 120 back to normal 80 degree C.
I guess around 3.000 RPM or so, will tell you more precise when snowboarding season begin...

Wow, I would have thought 5th at 90km/hr on an uphill would be quite low rev's. 3000 RPM is looking good!

I haven't tested anything like top speed out on my 3.5 SWB, but it seems to have a lot of power. I believe it's rated at over 220HP with a fair amount of torque. It runs fine on highway, although I haven't done any towing with it yet so can't comment there. Just my $0.02, if you ever considered the gas variants.

A little late to the party here, but figured I'd throw in my $0.02 since the Pajero has been my daily driver for 3 years now (when I'm not riding the motorcycle, that is).

1993 Pajero Exceed LWB, 2.8 (4M40) Automatic.

Open highway, unloaded, it'll pull 110-120km/h @ ~3300rpm all day with no complaints. As far as hauling a load, I have a 9'x5' 3500lb capacity utility trailer (weighs about 600lbs empty) that I use for hauling garbage to the dump, trailering my dirt bike, and hauling firewood. I can get nearly a full cord of firewood in the trailer, and that definitely changes things up a bit. I would guess the combined trailer/load weight ramps up to around 2800lbs or so with a full load of firewood. Climbing hills is far from 'perky', and braking isn't something you want to do in a hurry, either.

If you're considering hauling a large-ish travel trailer around in the summer, I'd definitely recommend installing a pyrometer to keep an eye on your EGT. A pyro is a much more 'real-time' indication of critical engine temperatures.

ETA: forgot about top speed - I pushed it as far as 145km/h on I5 heading north out of Seattle last spring... felt like it could go a little more if necessary but I wasn't going to push my luck with the highway patrol down there :P

It's a little difficult to compare the gassers to the diesels. For vehicles of this vintage, the gasoline variant will generally have a higher top speed, while the diesel will have the greater low-end torque. Diesels today don't struggle as much too keep up to their petrol cousins on the highway.

The title of this thread is a bit mis-leading or ambiguous because I didn't get the sense that "top speed" or "fastest speed on the highway" was the full extent of the question.

Its been a while since driving on stock tires, but it used to be possible to hold 130km/hr up the coquihalla tollbooth hill. As long as you got the speed at the bottom and just held it ad 3500 or so rpm it would just motor right up. Im sure if I had a pyrometer back then it would nag me to ease off, but it seemed to love it and drove much better after as we had just purchased it FOTB.

Since then have been running 33's, the gearing is a little taller and tires much heavier so it dogs a little to keep momentum. Removing the muffler and resonator, upping the boost and fueling slightly have made perform better than stock under acceleration and cruising, but due to gearing, still slower on long hwy climbs. It can hold 90 up the same tollbooth hill and shed enough heat, but I wouldn't want it to climb much longer as it gets too hot

These guys are pro's. They can do mandrel bending on 1.5" to 3" stainless steel. They have done a number of Delica's including an intercooler. Just had mine done by them, and I will post pictures ASAP!
