Custom Dashboard

Post by SnowBall »

Has anyone thought of doing a custom dash? It would be a great spot for additional gauges and cup holders that are built in  rather than an add on (don’t great the add on’s great don’t get me wrong) I have started looking online and I know it is going to be a massive undertaking, but if it could be done just imagine the possibilities…..wow. I am going to be doing some research over the next few months but if anyone find easy ways to modify the dash please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I haven't mentioned this to anyone yet; its on the "next year" file... but I have been daydreaming about pulling my L300 dash and replacing it with a custom sheet metal one. Not flat (like an old jeep dash) - it would have to be a folded piece but I want a flat surface for mounting any dial, switch, light that I choose, and I want a flip out panel so I can work on it easily.

I haven't done a lot of structured research yet, because its really not in the budget this year, but ... if you look at race car custom dash fabrication, there is much to be learned.

I've done stuff like this before, it's not that hard if you've got the tools and know what you're doing (like everything in life) but you'll need a bunch of free time and your vehicle will be out of commission for quite a while. The biggest PITA is if you're painting it. There's alot of bondo sanding, then primer sanding, then paint sanding. Getting fiberglass smooth is not like getting sheet metal smooth and it's a heck of a lot of work. You'd be best off to stick to a textured finish or even upholster the finished product. The amount of sanding and ass pain increases with the number of little details and nooks and crannies in your dash.

Also, for a while there during the sanding process you'll be the itchiest you've ever been in your whole life!

That's the heading indicator, a gyroscopic compass that supplements the magnetic compass that's out of the frame to the right. While it's immune to the turning and acceleration errors that affect magnetic compasses, it drifts slowly as Earth rotates underneath it, and you have to periodically re-sync it with the magnetic compass during flight.

I made this because my stereo/dash piece got stolen:

A full fibreglass dash would be killer but I can't think of what else I would need.
