Nice looking rig.

The most important question.

Have the bottom-end bearings been replaced since it arrived in Canada and a receipt/shop to confirm it ?

I'm refering a friend in Toronto as he's been looking to get a clean one for a while.

Are all LC known to have bad bottom end bearings? Also I'm assuming these bearings are in the engine?

This is a awesome looking LC. Very clean.

Hi Guys,
No, the Big End Bearings have not been done since the truck arrived in 2009.

I am surprised your importer didn't warn you about that issue.

jasonmc,

I am posting this information below for you benefit and the future owner.

It would be a shame to see the BEB's take our the engine as yours is a fine example of a clean LC80.

This is something that should not be looked at lightly.

Over the past 6 years of importing, I have not seen one 1HD-T that has not had them replaced for the exception of the blow engines where owner's weren't aware of the issue.

This has to be done on all JDM 1HD-T's.

Every 80 that came over from Japan to Canada/UK/Australia/Europe/Russia seems to have this problem. There was a recall for them as well.

This is a quote from Wayne at Luxury Imports.

BEBs,
if they go south then a new engine is needed, i am surprised your importer didn't warn you about that issue. it is a poor composition issue on all the HDT and HZ engines. under a grand will install them (am i right Romey?)
the JDM automatics don't have an aux tranny cooler and it is a must over here. Romey has the part number for a nice kit plus a PROPER tranny gauge is needed. when that light goes on then it is time to pull out your wallet. i have seen more and more of these trannies dying a painful and expensive death.
Photos from a recent vehicle to be checked. 1/92 HDJ80. One owner since new, serviced regularly, and used as normal transport (no hard work or towing). Motor still running well with no unusual noises etc.

Shots of No. 2 cylinder, although all others where in similar condition.

Damage to conrod slipper (bottom one in picture). No real damage to cap slipper. The bearing is overheating and the base material deforming under the shock of the power stroke.

Image

Close up of damage. Note upper highlighted area shows a piece of bearing material flaking away from backing. Other highlights show fractures where this seems about to happen.

Image

Result of bad big end bearings gone too far. Conrod broke through the block and smashed timing case.

As mentioned, it's a very good idea to replace the BEBs. We have done many of these, and very few actually show up with problems - but you are taking a gamble with a very expensive engine if you do not update the bearings. The damage is primarily caused by the quality/type of bearing material used and a cavitation problem that occurs at certain RPM ranges - which are exactly the RPM range when you are driving at highway speeds.

We have a number of the ACL bearings still in stock, but we just sold 6 more sets today.

The job will run ~ $600 - $650 including bearings, rod bolts, and an oil/filter change.

Hi John,
I bought the truck recently from a gentleman in Perth, Ontario. He ordered the LC from JapanPower in Ottawa in 2009 with 118100kms. My fiance refuses to drive it, that is why its up for sale. If I were to keep it i'd through on a new set of tires and have the BEBs done. Right now I like to sell and get what I paid back.
The market is definitely slow for the gorgeous beast!
Cheers,
jason

is it a big job, in a nutshell - no. 8-)
the question is: are you mechanicly inclined? do you pay attention to detail? do you have a place that is CLEAN to do the job in? do you have the tools?
if you answered YES to the above quesitons then buy a shop manual or get someone to photocopy the pages needed and buy a pair of rubber gloves and have at it. :-D

just remember, if you mess up it is a $6K to $10K repair bill  so pay attention to detail. :-(

cheers
