Victoria Day in Kilarney park ON

Post by Mbryant »

On the Victoria Day weekend in 2010 my wife and I went on our first camping trip with our Deli to Kilarney Provincial park on Georgian Bay Ontario. I love the park with its contrasts of pink granite and white quartzite of the La Cloche mountains (impressive hills for Ontario) We went on two hiking trails one to the bay and the other up into the quartzite hills. We are hooked on camping this way and next we are thinking of more hiking and perhaps some sea kayaking in the Bay.

The Bed: I wanted to keep the design simple and be able to keep the two front captains chairs. Using two pieces of 3/4 ply I made a bed with a hinge. When in use the front piece unfolded and sat just above the chair seats which were turned around to face the back. The front was supported by a leg of plywood made to be self supporting and removable. When not in use the leg is removed, the front folded back onto the back and the chairs spun back into place. The back part of the bed is supported by taking plywood and making a self supporting stand that can easily be taken apart. No pictures of the assembly yet just the finished product. Oh and for our mattress we put in a spare double mattress we had in storage. Nice cushy sleep.

The Tent: We purchased a SUV tent from Bass Pro made by Napier model 8300 I think. Anyway it works by connecting the deli to the tent via a tube of material that fits over the back. It was nice to have a tent to stand in and keep the door open for air movement. All in all it worked well although how it will work in windy and very rainy conditions I have yet to see. It is reasonably constructed although it is no MEC or North Face tent that is for sure.

That is a nice set up, Mbryant. Beautiful scenery, to be sure but I would love to see more of your tent set up (inside and out). The bed looks comfortable and cosy.
