Hi.. Just curious how much would a Delica like this cost in Canada. In Australia it would be about $7000-8000 . A lot of us import our own cars from Japan and a low spec 94 Exceed like this one without the Crystalite roof, climate control, ECS etc would cost approx $1500 to buy FOB in Japan and then $6000 or so to get it over and complied etc etc . Also if it were a later model with all the options like ABS ,Air Bag, Crytal Roof etc how much would it cost in Canada. And finally are you allowed to import the Series 2s. I have only had a brief look around this site and haven't seen any S2s..Cheers and good luck with the sale..

Hi, here the labor is more expensive than australia & do more compliance than australia.
you are saying about the later model. yes we would like the later model but for a reason that we have 15 years old law that need to follow. we dont have any choice. as per crystal lite roof you are saying you have to differenciate the 2 country canada & australia. its depends on what people choice. some people want crystal roof & some people dont want crystal lite roof.
as per the newer one yes we like to get newer one but we cannot. its the rules we have to follow here in canada for importing car.
hope this help
Cheers;

G'day again. thanks for the reply. That would explain why I have only seen photos of S1s. So this 15 year rule means S1s must be new to you. We are allowed to import any car that was not sold new in Australia, this means I can not import a WRX either sedan or hatch BUT I am allowed to import a 22B WRX which is a 2 door model never sold here. We can import any Delica even the D5s as long as we can find a compliance workshop that has an "evidence package" for that model. It must be frustrating for you guys but at least you can now get the L400 S1s. If you are into 4x4ing then you are not missing much. The newer they get, the less capapable they get. The S2 are like a snow plow in sand (we have a lot of sand :-D ). They need a lift kit and some members have even cut across the front bumper to make it 3 inches higher of the ground. Compliance here means all liquids and filters need to be replaced. Injectors serviced. New tyres. Baby seat floor restraint points installed and that is about it. We can import a nice late model (97) with ABS and airbags and all the good options in a LWB for about $13-14k and a Series 2 for about $17-18. These prices are sitting in your driveway ready to go. If you want to see some nice Delis there are lots of site. Hikari Auto (I think that is how it is spelt ) always have nice cars. They are just a Jap Car sales yard but the pick only the nicest ones from the auctions. There prices are a bit over the top compared to the auction but as far as seeing nice cars it is worth a look.One thing I should mention is that the Series 1 L400s have a design fault that is a real problem for 4x4ing and that is the bash plate has a bolt on it that, when you impact the ground , the bolt gets shoved through the bottom of the oil filter and empties your engine of oil in a few seconds. There is no warning until your motor cooks. We have had several members with wrecked motors because of it. We have a member that makes proper bash plates that fix the problem. The least you need to do is remove the bolt AND the captive nut on the bash plate. You will see the one just inches below the oil filter. Then just use a cable tie to hole the plastic plate in place. At least then if you bottom out it is just flat steal hitting on it and not a bolt end or sharp captive nut... Cheers :-)

Basic supply & demand economics....

As the poster said above, vehicles coming from a country other than USA must be 15 years or older to enter.

It's much easier to find a newer 5 - 10 year old vehicle in MINT condition than to find an older 15 - 20 year old vehicle in the same condition.

Also, Canadian bidders are competeting against others from around the world such as UK, Australia, etc that don't have a 15 year rule. More bidders, the higher the price.

Last point is our duties in Canada. $100 for every vehicle with A/C and every vehicle imported from a country other than USA/Mexico is subject to a 6.2% duty ($620 for every $10k of FOB value).

These are just a few reasons why 15 to 20 year old vehicles for sale in Canada cost the same if not more than the 10 year old vehicles going to other countries.

When a vehicle is that old, it is simply hard to find something that is worth shipping around the world.

Another point to add to above. I am not sure what his asking price is on the Delica but the service this seller is including would cost you $2000 - $3000 in a shop (with parts & labour). This is not including the $1000 for the new lights.

New Lights :o !!!! Sounds like some bureaucrat is really keen to stop you guys from having fun. What is the rational behind replacing the lights ? Do you guys drive on the opposite side of the road or something. L400s have excellent lights. The front indicator lenses are sometimes a bit daggy but nothing that can't be fixed with a good polish. Thanks for the explanation. I bet you can hardly wait for 2013 :-D . One of the biggest problem you must have in getting a good car that is 15 years old is the "haircuts" they receive in Japan. "Haircuts", if you are not familiar with the term is winding back the speedo. It is a common practice that the Japanese have to avoid taxes. It goes like this... I buy a Deli new and keep it for 60,000 ks then the speedo gets wound back to 45,000ks cause at a certain point the taxs are going to cost more because of the number of KS. The buyer drives it for 30,000 ks then it gets wound back from 75,000ks back to 60,000ks and so on and on so eventually you have a car that has done 200,000ks that has 100,000ks on the speedo. To avoid detection they do not do servicing because speedo readings are recorded. We have found documentation down behind the glove boxes on L400s with 60,000ks on the speedo that show that the car had done over 180,000ks. Dealers also have them wound back in Japan before they leave . That is why it is hard to get them to show auction sheets which show not only the "grade" of the car but the speedo reading. We have members here with cars having problems like worn out timing chains which last for 400K+ when the speedos only read 100k or less. Cheers..

If anyone is paying 1K for L400 lights, they're getting bent over. Customs lights can be made with a few hours of your time and some research. :shock:

"custom lights" don't have that silly little stamp that the compliance shops look for.

not sure if that is in jest or not... but yes we do, and that is precisely the rationale for new lights, the headlights must be aimed for traffic on the right side of the road instead of the left side of the road as the factory lamps are.
