new member with glow plug relay issue

Post by doc holiday »

new member with old problem glow plug relay.

I've been reading posts until my eyes bleed. I had starting problems so my mechanic changed the glow plugs. Now the glow plug relay won't click when I turn the key on. As soon as I start cranking then I get a clicking. The clicking appears to be coming from the brass coloured relay. Nothing from the silver relay. It still starts, better on hot days. It takes a bit of cranking. Now my mechanic admits he knows little about these vans, but I am in the kootenays and stuck for someone more knowledgeable. The clicking issue may be a coincidence but it was clicking prior to the glow plugs being changed. I have the relay plate out and can see the relays. What are the other two parts? Should I change the silver coloured relay?
does anyone know a mechanic with JDM experience any where near Cranbrook?

Other than this, I love my Delica. I have even had it start in -25 C. I teach skiing and take it to the hill all the time.

take some pictures of your relays and post so we can tell what your talking about, I have 4 boxes under there, 2 glow plug relays a drop resistor and the starter relay, there are a couple different designs depending on the year and possibly if it came with the "winter" package.

there are a couple diagrams of the different glow plug relay setups on the site, perhaps in the wiki as I have used them myself.

It's usually the glow plug controller that packs up, not the relays themselves. It's the gold box in the driver's side B pillar. The usual problem is leaking capacitors that corrode the circuits.

The usual troubleshooting applies: do you have voltage at the glow plugs when you should? How much current are they drawing?

I fixed mine myself (no clicks at all). Do a search.
