Overheating issues

Post by GISdood »

I have a 1993 2.8 Pajero Exceed.

Lately I've had some erratic temperature guage readings. The vehicle starts fine, no problems at all. No white smoke or excessive black smoke. The temperature recently seems to climb up to 80-90% of peak temperature reading before dropping back down to normal levels when I hit the highway. It intermittently climbs and falls in stop & go traffic. Checked the radiator today, and it was only down about a half liter, and the overflow reservoir was over 75% full, so I don't think its losing coolant. I've also done the 'condom test' of putting a rubber over the rad cap with the engine running to see if the head gasket is gone, allowing exhaust gases into the coolant system and vice versa - it passed that test fine... so I don't think its a head gasket issue.

Could it be a coolant system or rad/heater core blockage? Would a flush be recommended? Has anyone else experienced any similar symptoms or have any suggestions?

Delica's more & more are needing recore radiators, as they get clogged up with the white stuff attached to the insides (on ours, look inside to see if you can see the white crud, if you can see it on the top that is not good). Glen at Coombs http://ccautos.ca told us the details for recore, but I forget the details, sorry. Christine.

Bummer Dood
I hoped the 2.8 engine didn't have any overheating problems but Christine is correct. Has your rad been recored and water pump changed yet?? If not it needs done. If that doesn''t cure the problem email me and I'll run you through what else need be done.

hi, you cannot do the recore for pajero v26or v46 pajero with 2.8 4m40 engine as the design is a plastic tank on top & the bottom & the core is made up on aluminum. so its a trow away type. i do have some radiator coming end of the month if you guys need it. i special order this radiator nothing available in the market here in canada for now.
cost is $300 brand new
Cheers;

That's a good price and a lot less than I paid to have my delica radiator recored. Maybe the 2.8 liter diesel is better than the 2.5 model. That should stir things up a bit. :-D :-D

Sounds like the thermostat to me too. If you haven't had you cooling system cleaned and flushed it is a good idea. A new pump is recommended as well. You don't have to search too hard to find more than a few members that have had problems because their cooling system was lacking.

I've just been keeping an eye on the coolant level, for now. I topped up the rad last time the temp spiked (took about a half liter) and with outside temperatures climbing, it hasn't happened again since.

I'll definitely be looking at a new thermostat, new rad cap, and a proper flush before I go with a replacement radiator. Eliminate all the small less-costly stuff first. We'll see how it goes...

I've been warned off of doing a flush on an old suspect rad as the years of built up crud is apt to break free and plug up vital channels elsewhere in the system. Scroll down a ways in this thread to see a delica rad - http://www.delica.ca/forum/coombs-count ... 54-45.html and it came out of a running bus! If the rad is the original Japanese one it for sure needs replacing as they are pretty much always blocked up. My 2 cents anyway... :-D :M
