And you were really handsome in that uniform, belive me! So, what`s the problem? Almost twenty years passed - you should visit Vladivostok.mararmeisto wrote:Um, let me think...NAKAMI wrote:Sorry, my memory failed me! Thanks for the photo. I think you shold remember how beautiful Vladivostok girls are!
Yes, of course! And they thought we were so handsome, what with our soap and toothpaste and colonge. I can remember spending a good bit of my pay on toiletries I never ended up using... but it was all worth it. Wonderful port visit. As I've said, always wished to return some day.

Nakami, out of curiosity, I see from your avatar that you take your van off road, have you done any modifications on her? We see You Tube videos of the Russian club driving up creeks and through bogs & so on ~ what sort of trips do you take her on? Also, do you have a name for your van?

No, I haven`t done any modifications on my van. Frankly speaking it`s not mine now - my wife drives it. No lift, no snorkel, even no big foot! Standard tires 215X80X15. Even in stock delica is a very good off-roader, what you can see on that photos. It was in 2005 we travelled across Primorie, went to Vityaz bay, and the road there goes very close to the water, but in one place there was simply no road at all, so I had to ride across the ocean. I wouldn`t call that off-road, but we had fun! The real off-road was when my wife (she worked as a driver on local TV) went to tank testing area and she managed it. Unfortunately we have no photos. I call my van "Devochka" (little girl).FalcoColumbarius wrote:Nakami, out of curiosity, I see from your avatar that you take your van off road, have you done any modifications on her? Re: May I join in?
The first time I heard of Vladivostok was the song by the Canadian band Prism. The album it's on made a big splash the summer of 1978 when I was 15 and I still can't hear the the name Vlad. without hearing that tune. Anyone else remember this? When my brother was over there a few years ago I reminded him of this song and he had some of his local Russian friends have a look and a listen - the consensus was amazement that some western rock band would have any interest in Russian history. Here's the lyrics and the link to the band's (yeah, they're still a band!?) web page:

Vladivostok
Pulled into Vladivostok
Must have been a hundred degrees below
And I can't remember ever being that cold
Then they shackled us like criminals
And put us on a train
And we waited in the darkness and the snow
We awakened in the morning
As the train began to roll
And the freezing Russian winter
Had already claimed a soul
From mountains ever northward
Seemed like six or seven days
Till we finally found the place we were to go
Hey Hey Vladivostok...What's it gonna be?
I'm so lonely, you're the only place thats left for me
Hey Hey Vladivostok, you got me on my knees
It's been so long since I went wrong
Someone help me, won't you please
I wish that I could see you
Hold you near just one more time
And hear you say the things you used to do
Well, lo and behold, I see before my eyes
A vision...apparition of you
You know I'd go a thousand miles
And I'd walk most all the way
Just to see you smile the way you do
...the way you do

You think absolutely right about Transsib! 9288 km. I tell you what: I know I a man (we work together) who made a trip few years ago on his delica 1991 Exceed, from Vladivostok to Ukraine & back. 11000 km in one direction. That is what I call an adventure! It`s my dream either. Thanks for you complimentJaz wrote:Vladivostok is also the starting point of the Transsiberian railway I think... that's on the bucket list!
