Baby car seat install, how to:

Post by delicat »

Got small kids???

I'm sure I'm not the only one having fun making babies in the Delica world so for the new Delica owners that happen to be parents of young kids here's a practical way to install your infant or toddler's car seat in the back of a Delica with Captain chairs.

Best of all this will work safely with the older '90's model that only had lapbelts! :-D And both car seats can now be swiveled and moved back and forth!

My 2 yrs old boy has his larger car seat installed behind the driver's seat while my infant with the baby car seat hooking onto a base is installed behind the passenger's seat. That way it's easier for access.

I used to use the 3 points seat belt to attach both kid's car seat but now I don't need to. With the infant there's absolutely no modifications required. Just use the provided hooks that come with the base of the infant car seat and hook them to the existing female part of the lap seat belt. On the passenger's side there's two of those, one for each hook. As it's using the original belt that are intended for heavy adult I'm sure they'll do fine with a kid!

If you only have one kid then you can use the passenger's side and you won't have to do any mods.

For my older boy sitting behind the driver I simply removed the useless male part assembly of the lap seatbelt and replaced it with a baby car seat anchor (at Cdn Tire for under $5). I had to drill the hole size a tiny bit larger to fit the original grade 8 bolt, man that anchor steel is hard! Now I use the car seat hook to attach on one side to that newly added anchor and on the other side (middle) the hook attaches to the existing female belt.

Here is the original assembly:

Now replaced with the anchor:

And hokked up on the anchor side. For the other side just use the female belt as in the first picture.

As for the rear strap I installed another anchor under the seat using existing bolt, simple.

I dearly love my kids and feel confident that it's safe but usual disclaimer here, do this mod at your own risks...

Enjoy!

Wow, that's way more mods than we put in with our car seats. (You must love your kids way more than we love ours. :-D ) We just installed an anchor in the back underneath where you did. Once that is in place it functions like any other seat did in our old Windstar. Our strap goes not over the top, but through the crack between the back and bottom of the seat.

Pink, what you're referring to is for the back strap only? (I could put it through the crack but I'd have to slice the seat cover). What about the main harness, do you still use the seat belt and can you swivel and easily move the seat back and forth?

I wouldn't use the anchor below the seat to attach the actual car seat as they are not strong enough for that purpose (or so I think anyway...)

Cheers!
