L400 or L300....

So now that the L400 can be imported I find myself stuck between the two generations. Love the sit-on-the-front-axle style of the L300, but could use the room and like the little bit of "oomph" of the L400. I'm leaning more towards the 92 exceed as I've seen Erebus' and, in addition to the style, find the room adequate. But just wondering...
If you guys were on the verge of purchasing, which would you take & why?

I see the L400 and imediately think of an MPV.

As much of a good brand of vehicle as Mits is , I bought the L300 for the "Ugly Cool" look. L400 would be an awesome substitute for a family looking to upgrade from a N/A mini van.

As I'm heavily into my midlife crisis I settled for the Delica ( I thought about the red sports car and young blonde, .......but my wife doesnt like 2 seaters :-) )

We're getting a 2nd vehicle and it will be an L400.

Looks are very different than the L300's.

But in all fairness, the L400 has the edge in almost everything.

L400 +'s over L300 :

2.8 TD intercooled
Quieter / smoother ride
Better road manners
More refined interior
Can buy in a long-wheelbase = more room
Rear disc brakes
Wider track (axles)
Longer wheelbase (more stable while driving)
Parts are all compatible with North American Mitsu Montero 92+ Gen II
Most important = SuperSelect . You have AWD + 4x4. The best of both worlds and it's selectable shift on the fly.

L300 +'s over L400 :

Easier to lift and put larger tires if you're into that
Looks more agressive/unique
Cab-over funny driving style
Cool box in the front
Some come with poptops, as campers, customized, lifted, sliding windows,etc...

L300 all the way. Mostly because L400's are butt ugly.

Looks like some poor dude couldn't handle the domestic life and tried to pimp out the family caravan. If you get one buy it with heavily tinted windows and only drive at night.

Sorry, is that too opinionated?

jfarsang: the L300 body style is a big factor in me wanting one for the past couple of years. However, the specs of the 400 is making this decision slightly complicated.

from what I can tell... the long wheelbase L400 isn't much bigger than a standard L300, and the standard L300 actually has more interior room than the standard L400 (due mainly to the engine location)

I would say they are similar but when you actually sit inside both in the front/rear, the L400 feels roomier. Could just be the way it's designed.

L400 looks like a lifted toyota estima (or MPV as others have said). Seems cool in it's own right though, I'd say easier to mod for more oomph as it already has an air temp sensor on the updated IP as well as a viscous center diff coupling for F/T 4 hi. Also, it is a younger vehicle, so some bugs (aside from rust) are worked out.

Also, not too sure, but I'd expect better fuel economy, even though engine has larger displacement due to more highway friendly gearing.

Just discovered the UK site - plenty of photos of L400s there!
The more I read about the 4, the more I'm leaning towards it...
My initial concern about the L400 is that this is its first year of "eligibility"... I'm wondering about the availability of support here locally (Calgary). I'm not mechanical in any way, sense or form and so will have to rely on someone else to tinker with these...
I must say that the look is starting to grow on me... kind of like a mean MPV look...

If you just discovered the UK site then also make sure to visit the Aussi site as well, loads of info there.

You guys all know you'll be getting the very first batch of L400 produced and you know what happens on new models... always more issues. But it's your choice.

lots of people on the UK site seem to think that the first gen L400 wasn't so hot, sounds like the "facelift" version is much better... ironed out some of the wrinkles I guess...

If the first deli I ever saw was an L-400 I would not have been anywhere near as intrigued! I don't mean to say they aren't cool and better for me than a 4x4 pickup, but I think they lack all the charm of the L-300's. I just love the 300's cab-over, VW bus-like friendliness as opposed to the snarly, aggressive mini-van look of the L-400's. Our L-400 driving friend, Carstairs from the UK site, asked the L-300 tech forum why it is such a relatively quiet fourm. Our other UK friend and teacher, Mystery Machine Bruce responded that while he likes the L-400's well enough, and has even owned a few, the L-300's tend to be much less problematic. I'll be running an L-300 as long as possible, but I am excited to actually see my first L-400 face-to-grill, and am interested to follow the growth of the new L-400 community, both here at delica.ca and out there on the roads. And judging from the enthusiasm for them over on the UK site, the L-400's are sure to be every bit as popular here as our 300's currently are. Happy motoring to all who get into them :M :-)
