Neutral switches and windshields. Failed inspection.

Post by electrik_jester »

So failed the BC inspection today. 92 Exceed with a 5 spd manual.
Mine is an out of province inspection as my deli was imported into Alberta first.

Had the inspection at Townside automotive in Victoria.

Seems I need a windshield with AS 1, 2,10, or 14 type glass.
A neutral switch, so you cannot start the car with out the clutch being neutral.
Some reflectors
and probably a headlight fix.

Kinda surprised considering this vehicle passed in Alberta as is.

Forgot to ask, has anyone found or priced replacement windshields?
And the neutral switch device same question, never knew they existed.

Thanks

I'm really surprised your windshield isn't marked, I'm not really sure you can even get a Delica windshield that isn't compliant...
Check it yourself and see what markings it has...
Beyond that, most of the larger glass shops should be able to source a windshield, but it may be expensive and take some time, they may find it easier to look for a windshield for a 1989 mitsubishi vanwagon instead of a delica as that was the name of the version imported to the US for a couple of years (same windshield) otherwise they need to look for glass for an L300 van or Delica starwagon

Neutral safety switch is essential on all standard shift vehicles... I'm not overly familiar with the manual Delicas, but I thought that there was a factory one on there? (hopefully someone with a manual can chime in here)

Reflectors are available at Canadian tire, $10 for all 4 complete with self-adhesive backing

Headlights, will depend what you need, if you still have the stock ones you will need to get new assemblies, most importers carry them, they're also available on ebay.

you also need daytime running lights (if you don't have them already) and front side marker lights (I converted the side turn signal repeaters as shown here) (rear side marker lights aren't required as the tail lights wrap around enough to cover it)

As for passing AB inspection, it's only VERY recently that AB started to crack down on inspections the way BC had previously, so lots have snuck through before they got picky here.

I recently had my windshield replaced at Capital City Glass in Sidney. They sourced a windshield in ~ 1 day. Not sure of cost, though as I had it covered by my $200 deductible. They can definitely get you a windshield in short order if you need one. Coombs county Autos may have a windshield in stock.

As far as the windshield goes. i have 2 at the shop right now there easy to get. I have already replaced one in the past using the (US) vanwagon windshield it has a windhield number of FW563 only used buy glass shop as a NAGS # the only thing different about it is that it has a slight blue tint instead of clear in our vans now. Which most all cars have a solar blue or green tint in them that you don't even notice. Its for cutting down on the the heat coming into the car and for the A/C. Let me know if I can help or if need someone to get you one in victoria i also know some good shops down there

I wonder how my 86 VW Rabbit would fare - doubt it would pass inspection because it doesn't have a 'neutral' switch...

Where do 'they' come up with this stuff (and I don't mean the individual inspection shops, I mean the Ministry)?

This stuff is generally mandated at the Federal level, and requirements go by model year. It's very rare that they completely ban older cars this way, but I have heard of some countries where hydraulic brakes are mandatory on all cars, as an example. This makes lots of cars non-road-legal, from split-window VW Beetles to 1940 Fords to most Bugattis.

I have a 1986 VW Jetta, which doesn't have a neutral switch, DRLs, or even, for that matter, E-coded headlights (surprised at that one...). But none of these were required for that model year.

My 95 jeep yj did not have a neutral safety switch. It came that way from the factory. I do not think it was a requirement in 1991, it may be now but it was not then.

I would contact Glen up at CCAutos, I believe he knows a lot about this sort of thing.

Perhaps by mentioning this I open myself up to liability but my manual definetly does not have a neutral switch.

As a personal anecdote I am glad it does not for one particular reason. I was out and about one afternoon and realized that the reason I had been having the low brake fluid light flash even after filling it several times had nothing to do with the brakes and everything to do with the clutch slave cylinder gushing out fluid(same resevoir). I put the van in 1st started it up, lurched forward for a bit until I had throttle control and drove off to my shop. Not possible with the safety do-ma-jiggy.

Well confirmed with Ray out at Magnolia that my windshield is not up to North American spec. Evidently it is not the original glass but some cheap knock off that is thinner by 2mm (or so the rumor goes) than those of you blessed to have an AS1 windscreen.

I have confirmed from another source (Capital Glass in Sidney) that the windshield number FW563 will indeed fit a Deli as this is what our friend above received as his replacement. So that is Two sources in the same thread voting for FW563 if anyone is keeping count. (Think I shall post this tidbit to Part and number section if there are no objections).

However, the one of the two glass distributors around here that stocks the item is currently on a 2 month hold till he gets new ones of which I hear he has ordered 4. So my friend you are also lucky as you seem to have gotten the last one on this side of the planet.

Is there a third auto glass distributor?

Speedy down town did not seem to interested to do any digging. Brocco and Mitsubishi the dealer did not get back to me today.

Glen in Coombs does have some second hand glass and I may likely be heading north this weekend to pick one up.

Anyone have a favorite glass installer? Still going to need to get it put in all water tight and yummy like

as Posted prior The windshield is #of 563 is correct being that a work also at a glass shop I do have some insight into it. And I do have 2 in stock because I was going to switch my own for the tint factor but haven't got around to it. Jeff at Captial normally buys from PPG. But every glass shop only has the option of 3 distributors PPG, Vanfax and Can-am and Can-am is only on the mainland. So we all end up getting from the same place. So
electrik-jester if you still need one in quicker than 2 months let me know but I am in Duncan bit of a drive. its Apple Auto glass in Duncan

Thanks for the offer but I got a used one from Glen at CC, though had I checked the posts earlier I might have for gone the long haul and come to you in Duncan, However it was a nice day for a drive and Glen had some helpful tips.

Thanks to all for your inputs.

If anyone has any idea how to install a neutral safety this is the last item on my get inspected list.
With some luck I hope to get it sorted out this week.
