Daytime Running Lights

I see a lot of discussion about DRLs. I just had a JDM vehicle certified last week and the inspector told me DRLs only required if "originally equipped". So I didn't have to install them to pass. Vehicle was a 91 Mitsubishi GTO.

You know Bob, when I was growing up in Vancouver "running lights" were the four coloured lights that mark the corners of one's vehicle, sometimes referred to as "parking lights". Using headlights during the day was considered to be distracting and I still believe this to be true. The Police know this too ~ which is why they shine their flash light into your eyes just as they ask you a question at a road block. It is the same when someone gets interrogated, the subject often has a light shining in his/her face so he/she is distracted and is more likely to make a mistake. So it has always perplexed me, in "light" of auto accidents increasing since this "daylight" idea was first implemented, why do the government still want to do this? A lot of people driving around getting distracted by aggressive lights (often high beams) and making mistakes. Do you remember when high beams during the day was a serious no-no?

I defused my so called "daytime running lights" and now only drive during the day with my passive "running lights" on, like I always have. The great thing about this is ~ it is I who turns them on. Makes me feel more apart of the driving equation thereby keeping me more aware of my driving situation.

Not immediately, but it is quite likely to cause a good deal of grief later as it will make you a target for CVSE who love to find ANY reason to pull over any RHD vehicle, they will also assume that any vehicle that doesn't have DRLs has other things wrong with it and continue to hassle you...

I highly recommend you add them, just to save yourself from future hassles...
