Oil Filter Numbers for an L400

I am kind of hoping someone can confirm or deny these filter numbers.

These are the applications listed in the application guide for the Donaldson Filter P502008:

Truck MITSUBISHI
2.8 TD35
1 4M40T

Truck MITSUBISHI
2.8 TD35
01/95- 1 4M40T

Car MITSUBISHI
2.8 TD
06/94- 1 4 M 40

Car MITSUBISHI
2.9L Turbo Diesel
1 4M40-T

Length is listed as 5.90 inches (149.86mm) which seems longer anyway, but the picture on the Donaldson website is of a shorty filter. Thread is M26 x 1.5

Here is the application listed for filter P557382:

Refrigeration Unit THERMO KING
SBIII
1 SE2.2

Length 6.92 inches (175.77mm) M26 x 1.5

And for the P551341 there are about 115 applications that seem to center around the 4D56 and 4D68 engines.

Length 5.31 Inches (134.87mm) M26 x 1.5

Anyone got definate numbers and what type of vehicle you use them on? Experience with them? Tell us about it. I almost think that the Donaldson website has the wrong image for the P502008 and the P551343. They almost seem to be switched. I want to order some in but I don't want the short filters for my L400 4M40 (as some vendors have advised against for an L400). Currently I am using the Sure Filter that Amazing Auto sells (SFO-8532), and they are considerably large. Thanks

While we're on it can somebody confirm the p/n for l300: P551343 is what I think it is.

I just want to make sure. Better safe then sorry.

would also like confirmation as i may have ordered a filter for a refrigeration unit when i need one for the van?

SORRY! I am in the process of figuring it out. I have been PM'd that it is the P502008 for the L400. So far this is the most definitive one I have received. I did a super search the other day though and it gave me the other number. That is why I want to get to the bottom of it.

That filter fits but it is shorter than the normal L400 filter. Like the sure filter ones from Mardy or the Sakura ones from RSI. I used one once but I like the longer ones better.

So what is the number you use? Do you use the P557382? Just wanting to clarify.

I wouldn't worry about the slightly smaller than stock filter size of many of the other brands. Most of the fear of the slightly smaller filters all goes back to threads when L400 were new to Canada where Mardy made comments that do not even make any logical sence. Like this one:
the L400 4m40 is same engine as pajero but spacegear is bigger than pajero
thats why mitsubishi makes it bigger to compensate the load & heavy frame for the spacegear. even its the same 4m40 engine.
it can be o.kl. for short while for long run no good soon it will destroy your engine as its has luck of oil circulating the engine. not enough to make the engine cool.
Yep that extra 100-200ml in the slightly larger filter (compared to the 6000ml already in the engine and sump regardless of filter) really makes a difference in circulating oil and keeping the engine cool...

Ironically nowadays Mardy sells Sure brand filters that are shorter than stock... :-D

Its pretty common to change the big diesel oil filters every second oil change, at least on Toyota Landcruisers with engines 2x the size and smaller filters, so pretty confident a slightly smaller L400 oil filter is just fine and dandy if changed every oil change. Relax.

What I would worry about is if that bigger Donaldson filter for the ThermoKing refrigerator has a bypass failsafe. When I first bought my L400 there was a couple NAPA filters part numbers floating about. I looked at both and bought the big long one (close to 7") since bigger is supposed to be better right. However later on researching the specs it did not have a bypass failsafe like every automotive filter should have (so in case the filter fails/clogs the engine still gets dirty oil...better than no oil) and its listed application was a compressor of some kind. Could be a similar case here??

Which one are you using now?

Just trying to get an idea of what us L400 maintainers are using now, donaldson or anything else. Maybe we could use this thread as a one stop to find info on all the varieties of oil filters for the L400. Searching comes up with hours of unrelated stuff..trust me I know :-)

I've mainly used Sakura filters. I've got a Sure Filter on there now. My last oil change was at CVI. I'll use whatever he has on hand. I think I've had some Vic filters on as well. I liked that design. They had a nut on the end of them. To help with removal I'm guessing. I've also used Fram filters as well. Over priced if you ask me. I want to try the Baldwin B7121 filter next.

Just checked with Acklands and the B7121 Baldwin filter would be $45.
Gregg Distributors does not sell Baldwin but cross referenced to a LuberFilter LFP 8752, also $45. FYI

Try your local Peterbuilt dealership. Price on the Baldwin is significantly cheaper than Acklands quote.

b7121 at napa is $46, this is why i originally was looking to buy filters in van from Mardy i don't think you can beat his price on the Sure filter.

I agree. They are good filters, I was just sourcing out something that is available inland for us flatlanders. With shipping I can get the Donaldson filters for about the same price as the SureFilters, I just have to drive 15 inutes into the city to pick them up. I guess it is a toss up. Nice to see we have a few alternatives here so we are not always phoning, sending smoke signals, carrier pigeons, morse code, etc to get filters from Mardy (sometimes it takes a variety of these methods to get ahold him as he is so busy :-) )

Edit: Called Peterbuilt in Edmonton and they don't carry the Baldwin line anymore (dropped it a couple years ago). He cross refferenced to a FleetGuard LF 3817 FLG which they do not have as well. He said it sounds pretty obscure. Agreed.

That's weird about Peterbuilt in Edmonton. They have Baldwin on the shelf out here on the coast. I have a relative at the Llyodminster Peterbuilt and he can order the Baldwin filters in for me at a discount price. :)
