I love Buffs, I've got a grand total of 9 hours 40 minutes of flying in Buffs on search & rescue missions. I too am an AME, graduated almost 2 years ago from SAIT, now working at Western Avionics. Judging by Wikipedia, Sunwest Arctic Charters and Ethiopian Airlines are the only 2 civil operators left.
But Viking Air (the owner of the DHC-5's type certificate) has proposed restarting production for the Canadian Forces' Fixed Wing SAR requirement. I'd like to see that, rather than buying C-27s and the money going to Italy.
I almost accepted an AME position with Great Slave Heli. in Yellowknife, but ended up turning it down. If I hadn't there would be at least 2 Delicas in Yellowknife.

Yeah viking is the TC owner for them, however from what we have heard they have no current plans to start production again until they get a military contract it seems. I have a few friends that work at GSH! in fact they are next door on the airport! Aviation is a very small community it seems

Viking is busy ramping up the Twin Otter production, which is going very well. Agreed, until they get a contract they wont build, but they probably wont get a contract if they aren't building. I can't say I have heard that name before, asides from the couple of guys I know, we generally do not associate with the helicopter folk
There are some videos of the buff doing some wild takeoffs and landings, there is one floating around of it landing in a soccer field!
