Canada-USA-Mexico-Belize-Gta trip

Post by lost2 »

Hi there,

We are leaving soon (next sathuday!!!) on a 8 weeks road trip. We will travel fast at first to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, than where ever we feel like going (probably to see some friends in Guatemala). We travel heavy, with a modified pop-up top Delica, 4 children and 2 adults.

If you want to get an idea of the trip, go to this blog address, where we'll keep friends and family up-to-date with our trip:
www.lesboubousenvoyage.lacaptive.ca

It is written in french (we're from Quebec), but feel free to comment in english. More pictures of the Delica setup will be post once we are in a warmer climate (beds, foldable kitchen, underneath tool box, etc.)

Any advice on this trip will be appreciated (Mexican & American border crossings, car insurances -For instance: Is MEXPRO a proper online Mexican Insurance company?, etc.) I read a lot on it, but a like your personal experiences with the uncommun Delica...

See ya,

Davy

Have a great trip...looking forward to photos of how you fit all 6 people inside. And the camping setup....Interested in the expenses as well.

We just went to 4 people from 2. We fit ok without sleeping in the hightop (yet)...Me and the wife in the back slide. 5 year old in middle and 8 year old across the front seat.... Biggest issue is gear for us....

Have a great trip...enjoy!

Thanks for everyone's good wishes for the trip...

We are in Montreal now. Our first 7 1/2 hours drive was just perfect. Next step is crossing the american border on tuesday. Than lots of driving... and some warmer climate soon.

Talk later,

Davy

Mexpro seems OK. I just bought the basic ACE plan. My 1991 Exceed cannot be covered for theft or total loss because of its age.

We're in California, heading to La Manzanilla next week. This is our 4th trip!

Best of luck! (Buena suerte) Bon Chance. Guatever!

I did a motorcycle trip from calgary through mexico 2 years ago, We just bought insurance by the border crossing to mexico,,, it was a small crossing and the last gas station before the border sold it (for a premium to us procrastinators!)

One thing to watch, after you cross the border and stop at the immigration, you have to purchase a permit...
We went, We paid, We got a stack of paper work (you have to give them the permit back before you leave the country, very important)
We never actually got the permit,,, some border crossing agent pocketed the money and relied on our lack of knowledge to pull the fast one over on us. We met a couple in an RV that had been turned around a day or so into mexico and directed back to the border for the permit,,, the fellow I was travelling with continued to central america when I turned around... bit of hassle for him at the southern end of Mexico, I think he bribed his way around it... Never realized it until either of us Left Mexico,,, Worth the double check!

Oh yeah, Golden rule... dont drive at night, even around sunset is sketchy... Every night we were late on our bikes, there would be at least one mega crash... those guys drive like maniacs and the big trucks arent very forgiving when your trying to share the evening road with them.

Have fun!!

insurance at the borders are useless and a ripoff. they won't touch/insure your rig if you're in an accident. only full vehicle theft and even then, good luck in getting a penny.

no one drives at night except for truckers, drunks and cows. stay away from all three or face the neapolitan code of law.

They crossed the border a few nights ago but this is good info to spread regardless. Always good vibes going their way and all other travellers.

There's quite a few Deli's in Mexico right now.

Hello,

We are in Yucatan, MEX now. A small pueblo of 2000 inhabitants, called Telchac Puerto.

Very nice.

We drove our way here in 3-4 days. We did drive at night, but not after 10 pm. Locals told us it was still safe until that late, the worse, hijackings, happening normally in the middle of the night.

We slept at PEMEX or paying stations (Casetas de cuota), where it is the safest place because of high activity and constant police and/or military presence. We opened the pop top every night at these, but you have to be able to sleep with lots of noise (fortunately everybody in the family does).

Ciao,

Davy
