Daytime running lights - BC regulations

Hi,
My Delica came with the lower driving lights wired as daytime running lights (they are spliced into the ignition signal).
I don't really like this setup as it is reducing the life of the driving light globes.
Would the side marker lights be sufficient for daytime running lights?
What have other members used for daytime running lights?
