Rust Repairs

Post by Dellyvan »

Hi team, I live in Nelson BC, with a 1996 2.8 diesel super exceed.

After a poor inspection from a local mechanic I purchased my Delica with some major looking rust/corrosion around the front wheel wells on the frame, which is disappointing as I was aware of the rust issue with these older vehicles and mentioned it to the mechanic but still he missed it. Anyway, Im now in a position where I need someone else to take a look and see how bad the damage is and if it's saveable.

I believe this is a common issue and wonder if there are pictures on here or a thread/link available for me to look at and compare to, to help me see what is saveable and/or not.

From what I can see, the major rust damage is located around the front wheel wells. I can take photos tomorrow when its light.

Any input is welcome, thank you

Aaron.

Bummer.

Anything can be fixed. Just depends on how much you love the van and how deep your pockets are. I've been picking away at rail rust on mine, about $1200 in and probably need another $1000 worth of work done to get it all. It's worth it to me, I love my van and have thrown way more at it than that in mods/camperization. The front rust can be a pain as often the engine needs to be dropped to address all of it. If it's the wheel wells chances are it's rusted under the battery tray which means engine drop. I use this guy on the island, Randall's autobody 250 336 2820. Very honest and loads of delica experience. I would give him a call and explain your damage as best you can and see if he'll give you a loose estimate so you have an idea. Go on the UK delica site or the Australian one, loads of pics on there of rust repair.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

@poochike

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Yeah I will give that chap a call for sure, to me it seems like a big job, but I guess what do I know.

Like I say, it’s a shame because I believe everything else works like a charm.

My pockets are not that deep but if someone with a good amount of knowledge can tell me honestly it’s saveable I’m keep to spend what I can.

Thanks for the time and knowledge once again.
