Out of Province inspection

Post by Daddiohh »

Just trying to line up my out of province inspection for my 1995 L400 SWB Crystal lite 2.8L that I have been waiting to receive for 2 weeks, several hiccups have caused delays in getting it, the latest was Canada day. I was informed today I need new headlights, must be DOT and point in the right direction. $1200 ouch! I ordered them today should have them in a week. I've heard this is a grey area but I've had 2 inspectors tell me it is not grey it is the law.
Has anyone had any surprises like this?
Am I going to get any others?

Thanks

Where are you buying your headlights from? $1200.00 seems a bit pricey. You can buy the lenses for the headlight assembly and replace them for much cheaper. You can pick up the lenses for around $400.00.
There are lots of posts on this. I did mine in a couple of hours. It was fairly easy.

The inspectors are right, it is the law. Any light, on any vehicle has to be DOT approved. RHD headlights point up and to the left so as to illuminate road signs (on the left side of the road) and so they don't point into oncoming drivers eyes. If you drive with these lenses in North America the light is directed into the eyes of oncoming drivers.

Have a look at this post re headlight marking and requirements: http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=12095

You will also need Daytime Running Lights (DRL's) to pass inspection. Some inspectors also will require these lights to be DOT approved (mine didn't). They need to come on automatically with the ignition (lots of posts on this). Use a relay and tap into an ignition source. Its pretty straight forward.
You will also need side reflectors, orange in front, red in rear. I used some small stick on reflectors I picked up at Princess Auto. They are about 4" x 3" and I stuck them on the side at about the same height as the front marker lights.

Have a look at the tires too. They need to have a DOT stamp on them for use in North America.

Oh yeah, check the glass too. Search the forums and look at the markings on the glass. Make sure the windshield isn't cracked. That will be an issue with most inspectors.

Have fun!

Just to add...
I assumed yours is a Series 1. The replaceable lenses are for the lights in the Series 1. I think you have to buy the complete light for a series 2.

Thanks izack98, I need entire lights, the inspector has done several Delicas and ran my Vin to see if I could just go with lenses. I knew about the reflectors, my glass is all marked DOT, the tires are brand new but I haven't looked at the markings, fingers crossed I don't need tires.

Just curious, is yours a Series 1 or 2?
