Should just take a second

Post by Danthevan »

Hi all,

I have been browsing the forum to help me out with the purchase of my 1998 Spacegear and the subsequent repairs. In Nova Scotia, aren't too many mechanics or parts available. Of course, it drove here beautifully and then started to hiccup.

Replaced water pump with help off here and a video on youtube. In removing the radiator fan cover, the connector for the hose snapped off. I went to Napa and got a tiny piece of plastic for $24. It was loose and started spewing vapors out into the motor. Did some more tweaking. Battery indicator and drip indicator won't go off. Passenger side window will now not move. Undid the panel and seems fine from there. Battery then died. Had it checked and it is fine. Was thinking about putting in two batteries anyway, so I bought another one. Indicator lights still on, window still won't move. At first, turning the wheel left turned off the indicator lights briefly., but now has no effect. The garage did a quick diagnosis and said it could be my alternator. Sounds like fun.

My thoughts: since the window won't move, perhaps a loose connection or misconnection occurred in the reinstallation of the parts. Or perhaps I installed the parts slightly wrong so that in turning the wheel it loosened the connection. I've read on the UK forum where a guy's sunroof was causing the battery to drain, but he had a newer model and the problem wasn't really solved on the thread.

Any suggestions? Please.

Fuses, fusible links, and grounds have all been checked? Alternator shouldn't have anything to do with the window not working... Maybe the motor has a loose connection? The door panels remove fairly easily if you google the instructions first.

Also, if you need mechanical help out there, maybe these guys can help - http://planetdelica.com

Those warning lights and dead battery mean alternator trouble. Very common. A local auto electric place should be able to rebuild it for you.
It's not that hard to take out. Disconnect the wire and connector, then two bolts, take off the two belts and it's ready to wiggle out. I removed the air box and the rubber hose from the airbox to the turbo to make room. It took me 30 minutes. Instructions are in the manual.

I would get that fixed first and then see what happens with the window.

Well, it seems it was a loose crankshaft pulley. Soon after this post, my belts started twisting and now she sits.

The part which has the belts run on it came undone and I was wondering:

1. How do I check if the rest is ok? I mean, is it just a case of getting a new rubber joiner and then rejoining it?

2. Where is the best place in Canada to get the parts? RockeyMountain seems to be a ghost site, is Amazing Auto the only one? Which parts should I be ordering?

3. What's the rough time it should take a mechanic to fix?

Thanks for everything. Sorry for being abrupt but 4 day without a smoke...
