Beware of Rising Sun Auto

Post by BackRoads »

After reading plenty of posts on Delica.ca, I was quite leery of dealing with Rising Sun Auto. Well it didn't take long to regret giving Steven my business.

If you deal with Rising Sun Auto, beware that he won't take returns on used parts that he sells and watch his math. His return policy was not provided on a receipt, was not on posted in his office, he didn't tell me and it's not on his website. It's an unusual policy for non-electrical parts and will cost you if he doesn't provide you the correct part.

My experience is that I needed a side 3rd glass window for a L400. He provided me a unique bronze tinted glass, not the normal clear glass which I needed. The bronze tint is in the glass and can't be removed. When I realized that the glass wasn't a match I asked to return it and that's when I found out his surprising policy of "no returns". He saw my van and knew it wouldn't match. :-(

The 2nd part of my experience was that I asked if he would match the price of another seller for this glass. We agreed on a price for the glass and chrome step side. After I paid him I saw the chrome step side and it was in poor condition. He accepted a return (which of course made me think he does returns) and refunded me an amount which cost me $40 more than the other seller's price. My understanding was that he was matching the other seller's price. I felt ripped off.

As the saying goes, Buyer Beware and I should have been more vigilant. I knew about Rising Sun Auto's poor reputation so I was concerned from the start when dealing with this business. However, I thought I'd give them a chance. I had no idea glass came in a bronze tint and he successfully took advantage of my ignorance. It was hard to tell until it was held up to the other glass. It would have been helpful if Steven informed me that it was bronze and not clear glass. Beware of what he won't tell you.

I have tried to find a solution (e.g. exchange for clear glass), but Steven isn't interested in trying to earn a long term customer. His priority is clearly on making a sale and not on customer satisfaction. His approach to business may maximize his profits and I don't blame him for that. However, as a customer you have choices and my advice, which echoes many other people's, would be to avoid Rising Sun Auto. I regret dealing with this business and it probably won't take long until you do too.

Thanks

Hi Chris,

Here are several reasons why I couldn’t get a return in the end.

1. You bought it 35 days ago ( directly from my shop, not shipped ) as it is way too long to return.
I don’t know its current condition/damage , because you have driven your L400 LWB a lot with that unique 3rd glass installed.
You never asked me to sell clear color glass, I couldn’t believe you can’t distinguish different color from others. I think mine was only option when you bought it from me.

2. You blackmailed right away after getting my return policy.
I hate getting blackmails. That’s a cheap behavior.

3. It is your responsibility to keep and show the receipt when you return products to retailers.
It is a common sense. Ask any retailer for their return policy.

So, don’t get me wrong. :?

Steven

I think RSI just needs to make there return policy much more clear...... Not returns after the part leaves the store period.
You would solve a lot of your problems this way.

That's why and the fact Steven won't sell to me(not that I would have gone back) he lost a lot of business from me during my l300 restoration, because you can't take a chance if the wrong part gets sent and it takes a few weeks to get it installed or its defective your stuck....Just my experience that's all.

You can do a search and find out my experience and read RSI's side of the story and make up you own mind. so no need to post to the specifics on my case. I feel for you Chris....

Although I don't know the details of any of the complaints here, I really don't get the attitude of many stores and shops. When I've had my own businesses the customer was always right, full stop. Sure now and then someone would take advantage of you, but by and large most people are honest and just want a fair deal. Losing a few bucks here and there but keeping people really happy was worth it to me. People would crow about the service to others and would always come back. In the end your profits might be off a few points, but the long-term benefits to your own personal well-being, the happiness of others, your reputation in the community, more than makes up for it. In fact, I often enjoyed the look on a customers face when they expected a big fight but got what they wanted with a cheery acquiescence.
While Steven might totally be in the right under technical grounds, how much profit is he really losing if he simply shrugged and took the thing back? Is it worth it for all the bad blood generated? Unfortunately, that kind of thing is really common, and it seems so many small business owners are real miserly penny-pinchers. Sure some might have to be to stay afloat, but not all.

last time I had an issue with service done to my van, I called them up and they fixed everything, including the very high towing costs, WITHOUT A RECEIPT. I WILL be returning back to them for any further service, even tho they are across the province; without hesitation. :-)

if a business treated me this way, I wouldn't go back for "seconds". EVER.
as cold as it is, consider this a learning experience.
in the future, you can now spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Personally I have never had any trouble with RSI....or any other JDM parts provider for that matter.

I buy a fair amount of stuff from RSI and one event in particular really sold me on RSI. I sent an email to Steven late on a Saturday night when I cracked the top tank on the radiator in my L400, totally my own fault and still feel stupid about it. Steven had a new rad in the mail Monday AM and it was on my Calgary doorstep Tuesday AM.

When buying used parts, and yes I have bought these too, I always ask about the differences as these Deli's have quite a few variations. I routinely ask for pics of parts because being in Calgary makes it all the more important to ensure the part matches what I need. The part I buy is only as good as the information I provide to the seller.

There are other options for Delica parts providers and if we want to ensure parts remain available its up to us, the buyers of JDM's, to support the businesses we trust.

Sounds like you have an option to exercise and I hope your next experience is a positive one.
Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

I've always had good experiences with my many dealings with Rising Sun.

I don't think your reasoning vis a vis the return of a tinted window 35 days after taking possession is really valid.....sorry....
