Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Re-charge A/C

Post by flyfishn »

So what is the normal cost to re-charge the A/C so it blows nice and cold?

I haven't visited this question yet. However I suspect that many of us have an R-12 system and will need to retrofit before we can recharge with R-134a? Not sure how to go about doing the retrofit?

Best to find out why the recharge is needed. My low press switch leaked after a recharge last year and now the switch needs replaced and rechrged. Most delicas come from japan with little or no system pressure, apparently drained before shipping.
See Steve Haase at KMS Tools Coquitlam or steve_haase@yahoo.com for a cheap recharge. he does mobile work and comes to your house or? I liked the work he did for me and his price was good. The leak occured after he recharged my system.

Oh forgot to mention, Princess Auto has $49.00 recharge retro kit with 2 cans coolant and one can Stop Leak (don't use). Check the price against KMS tools price but usually Princess wins. if you have no charge and no leaks you can refill yourself. Run the system as you recharge and look for an approximate 10 deg air temp drop at full charge. it's a big system and may take many cans.

How's fishn? I've been out lots of times this year and going to Tunkwa next week. two weeks later off to the Cariboo for another two weeks. Great summer coming!

Hey thanks everyone.

I haven't had a real trip in years as I have 3 kids. Oldest 8 and youngest 6 months, so it is very difficult to get away.
I might see if I can get some waders for the boy, he might be tall enough. I have lots of extra gear.
We were at Klein (Eggmont) prior to the long weekend and he was having a blast casting from the docks in the pissing rain.

Has Tunkwa turned yet? It is a beauty of a lake. I tried it and Leighton about 6 years ago. My favorite is Ross and I hope to be there in early October this year.

Good luck, though a bad day of fishn beats a good day at work.

Still watching this thread, hopeful someone will clarify the question about R-12 systems?

There is a substitute, and they'll just pump it in. You can no longer get R-12 to recharge your system (even our military, which has an exemption, is having a difficult time because they can't source it anywhere).

I got turned on to Hans Radiator in Richmond by CVI Auto after a bit of excellent service work there. Spoke to them on the phone today and was ready to make an appointment until she asked the year of the Deli and when I said '91 she said a retrofit was most likely to be needed. On the phone quote for the retrofit was $490, not sure what that usually costs.

I am going to pop by there tomorrow on the way home from work and they are going to take a look at my system to see if it is necessary but they are fairly confident it is. Anything pre '92.

None the less I will post my findings......

I have done a little research as I was sure with the A/C problems everyone has that my turn would be next. Luckily mine works great even @ 35 Degrees. You may want to look @ the following sites:

http://www.duracool.com/Duracool/acsolutions.html

http://www.redtek.com/index.html

The info makes them sound to good to be true. As long as your system functions you should just get it evacuated and fill it up yourself.

I am not very good with Japanese but under the 'hood' on my 91 Deli I have a sticker, that is in Japanese of course, and it has the number 134a on it.

It is a bit of an assumption but it makes sense to me that it would have already been converted before it came to Canada. Most car shops would not be up to date what import or Japanese regs would be

I would not have known this unless I had read this thread.

I will post what I find asap as I have two dogs and a kids in a van that gets up to 38

I am currently in Victoria but I will let you know what I find out.

Good luck

The conversion for using 134A requires the fitting of different size charging valves, among other things, so that the old R12 charging hoses will no longer fit. Some of the "too good to be true" charging kits,( such as Duracool), sold at Canadian tire etc, are I believe, a hydrocarbon gas as opposed to R12 which is a flourocarbon (sp). It's true that the hydrocarbon works just as well as R12, but bear in mind it is flammable as it's related to propane. Having said that, I don't know if there have been any documented cases of air conditioning explosions as a result, as the quantity is quite small, and contained in a sealed system. In the days before R12, I believe hydrocarbons were a common refrigerant. I personally would have no qualms about using it, but that would be a personal decision. Flourocarbons, (R12), are not flammable, but if exposed to an open flame, produce Phosgene gas, which was used for chemical warfare in WW1, and is nasty.

So 1992 and newer Delis have the newer 134A?
