first start of the day

Post by stugots1982 »

Hey

So not sure if anyone seen my opther post about the OD but I have another question after my first big roadtrip since buying my delica.

We drove from Vic to AB to tour the rockies as I am originally from NS and haven't been to the rockies. With the long days and lots of miles I noticed that every morning the first time starting the van when we would wake up was a little painful. It would sputter and have a hard time turning over. It was accompanied with a fair amount of smoke. This was also experienced last summer whne we borrowed the deli from its then owners (inlaws). Now that I am home and back to regular daily driving the van turns over fine with a small puff when it wakes up but nothing that seems to be an issue. I am just wondering if this is due to the long miles and hills we were driving. Last year it was during a roadtrip to tofino and again same as this time when it went back to its usual daily routine of around town the starting issues went away. Am no simply not letting it run long enough after the long highway miles and its just burning off carbon buildup or is there other issues possibly at hand?

Hoping I just need to let it run longer after a long day to cool down and burn off any residual buldup from working hard.

Cheers

You're waiting for the second click from the glow plugs before starting, right? Your symptoms sound like cold glow plugs.

I was, and it wasn't cold out when this was happening, simply first thing in the morning. I understand the engine was "cold" but certainbly not frigid. I just found it odd that it was only happening after long days on the road. Now that its back to normal daily driving the van starts right up like normal. I think I will be changing the glow plugs soon anyway since the issue showed up last year and there was also issues starting it in the cold and the answer at CVI was to put in a glow plug bypass switch to manually control the glow plugs. That has since been removed due to a small "fire" the wire going to the switch had.

Yeah, that is odd. I can't think of anything that happens during a long drive that might cause that kind of trouble- if anything, you'd think a long drive would burn off any deposits and the engine would start better!

Yeah I would have thought so as well. I don't get it. Now that im home and doing my regular daily driving the van sparks right up fine.

I had the same issue with mine last summer, turned out to be the fuel I was was using. As soon as I started running the Shell Premium diesel the smoke stopped, more power and better mileage out of a tank.
