egr blanking plate purpose?

Hey everyone, just curious as what the purpose of an egr blanking plate, any advantages of instaling one? i just had no idea what it does and heard about it in a few polls...

The only advantage is not having to maintain the EGR. Fitting a blanking plate is easy - takes about an hour - I spent most of the time removing the drivers seat and cover over the drivers side of the engine.

Has anyone tried to pass aircare with the EGR blanked out? I passed Aircare fine with out it blanked, just wondering if there would be a difference.

Was all set to blank the egr out untill i talked with a FUSO mechanic (big mitsubishi trucks) he said aside from it burning up harmful ozone gases it the egr acutually cools exhust gases, asists combustion by bringing in unburnt exhust gases etc, etc..

However he was the 1st guy to say not to do it.... everyone else seems to think its a good idea.... id like to hear from guys who have run it though the whole year blanked out and some results. especially with more turbo as your exhust gasses would be hotter.

Tell us more about boosting turbo and what it takes to do it??? do you kill your milage or better? did you do a bigger exhust? bigger intake? Pyrometer?

I'm not entirely familiar with the system yet but am curious, does the EGR vent the crank case gasses into the intake?

Crankcase ventilation is important in diesel engines. High base pressures can lead to all kinds of problems. In order to keep the engine in good tune you might be better off just leaving things the way they are.

Nope... EGR is your Exhust gas getting recycled into the cylinders to be re-burnt to reduce emissions and crap.

Still could be damaging to block it (blank it) which is what im trying to find out. Mine dos'nt blow any black now so it seems no need except if it gives you a performance advantage????

Does the exhaust gas pass through the valve before or after the turbo?

Is it connected to a wastegate?

Black smoke is usually due to too much fuel, too little air[boost].

Does the system use a throttle delay or puff limiter ?

I know an EGR reduces emissions on a gasoline engine, but diesel exhaust is usually tested for particulates [opacity].

Can't you clean the EGR unit when you start blowing black smoke? I thought I read that on the AU site awhile back. Not sure though. A lot of people do seem to just blank it out though.
