Start without clutch pressed

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Start without clutch pressed

Post by Firesong »

My std tranny L300 (1990) starts without having to press
in the clutch. Is this the norm for the older std models?

Hey,
Both my manuals start without the clutch in.
I stand outside my deli ,jiggle my stick to confirm neutral/out of gear,
turn the key for my glow plugs,
then crank her over and let her warm up.
Check the smoke out of the tail pipe,do a walk around
make sure there are no obvious things wrong.
On my 91 I have the choke/poor man's cruise control out a little,
when the engine warms up the rpms rise significantly, I untwist it.
On my 90 she fires up before I even get the key all the way turned,
purring away like a panther. (Glen at CC's fault :-)

If you leave it in 1st gear for second brake on an incline or something and forget to check your stick,
you will scare the hell out of yourself and possibly spill your cofee!
That is the trade off I guess, I like it! :-D

Right on! 8-)

Another positive is you can use the starter to limp out the way if your engine craps out. I believe that for inspection purposes, certain years are supposed to have a switch to prevent starting with the clutch out. I think mine is non-functional (non-existent) currently 8-)

My '92 is the same. My domestic-market '92 Mazda PU is opposite - ie. has a safety switch. For inspection a clutch safety switch is not actually required unless the vehicle came with one from the factory. The wording of the (BC) Out-Of-Province Inspection rules around this isn't obviously clear...they defer to the Fed regs, which indicate as I said. 3 inspection shops I asked all said it's required. Was able to convince the 4th that it is not.

Thanks!
I just wasn't sure.
I like it like that, in the winter I open the door, click it to on to warm
the glow plugs and start it without getting in. Walk around and clean
the frost off the windows etc etc.
The only time so far has been explaining to my wife to make sure it's
in neutral and clutch in. She does things on automatic (internally) and
you never know :)

The other thing to remember is that it's the inspection is SUPPOSED to be in accordance with the rules of the day. This is why my 1990 doesn't require a third brake light but a 1992 will. If you could find a '63 (or sometime around that year), you wouldn't be required to install seatbelts - weren't required.

I still miss my '94 Pajero!
