transmission output shaft & u-joint yoke

So, I've been having this clunky sound in my drivetrain for about a month or 2 and never bothered to get under there thinking it was just a u-joint (it only clunks upon accel after a gear change). When I finally get under there yesterday, I find that all my u-joints are spic & span.

What I do find is disconcerning.

The u-joint yoke attached (splined connection i believe) to the output shaft is loose. I can physically move it up/down/left/right.

Any thoughts??

Back slip yoke bearing? Is it a slip yoke? Moves in and out? There is a brass sleave in the output housing this can wear out. That is my first thought.

I'm not sure if it is a slip yoke or not. I have a steady bearing in my 3 u-joint driveline which would make me think that the yoke does not move in/out. But I still called it that for diagnosing purposes.

Does the brass sleave run on the outer diameter of the yoke? like the tailshaft seal does.

Sounds like i'd have to take the tail housing off to get at this. I 've heard that you can't buy just the sleave, you have to buy the tail housing. In that case, I'd have to get the sleave made.

Another option would be just the yoke splines are worn.
If thats the case, I guess cc-autos or the like might have one kicking around.

Does it move forward and back too?
Glen and the CC auto gents should have something for you,
good idea to call them for sure or e-mail.
Is the tranny an auto/5 speed?
Should be the same as the L300's ya?

Some pics would be good.

Ok so it is not a slip yoke I do not think (van is outside and well it is dark).

Go to the L300 downloads transmission get the automatic (it has the transfercase details) page 110 shows a large bearing holding up the rear output shaft with a spacer to set the amount of play. Looks easy enough to pull the drive shaft and back cover and check the bearing. I would think you can get the bearing at a good bearing supply house. Hope that helps?
