Trailer Towing

Post by Ralph in Winnipeg »

I picked up my buddy's 20' trailer the other night, towed real well. I kept the speed at about 90kmph and my engine and EGTs were about the same as driving 105kmph. This of course on flat roads with minimal wind. Loaded the trailer the other day with 20 sheets of roofing material and am hauling it 250km to my cabin tonight. There is one big hill but I can always stop and let things cool down if I must. Trailer weighs about 1500-2000 pounds, roofing is 1000-1500 pounds so within reasonable parameters.

Finally figured out the wiring - thank you internet! I couldn't figure out how four wires from the vehicle go into three for the trailer because they don't! I bought this snazzy (cheap) adapter at Princess Auto and now we have turn signals, running lights AND brake lights. So simple. I skipped running lights to get the trailer home since it was light.

Mounted the little adapter box under the truck box hopefully out of the way of flying stones and such.

That's one heavy trailer! My entire caravan weighs about 1500-2000lb (depending on how much beer I've put in it). Still, as you say, well within the truck's capability.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

The weight is a guesstimate but car haulers aren't light. It is only 16' long so maybe around 1500 pounds is more likely. I'm dying to know so I'll see if I can get it on some scales. I had no problems running up to the cabin. A steady 3000 rpm around 105kmph and EGTs only a little higher than usual around 400C. The temps hit 5-600 on the hills but still within range. Coolant temp was fine. I came back with a lighter load, a 5x6 utility trailer and the wind resistance was noticeable. I burned quite a bit more fuel on the return trip and coolant temperature was above normal. When all is said and done, pretty happy with how the trip turned out. I have a couple scrap cars to haul so that should be a bit more of a challenge!

That's quite a huge trailer. Your rig did a good job.

Thanks! I was pretty happy with how it all worked out. The truck came with a tow hitch and tranny cooler so should be able to tow stuff. I don't know if the rear springs are heavier than stock but I've had 1500+ pounds in the back and they weren't bottomed out. Pretty hard to over load a box that small though!

Thanks for checking in,
