New purchase..91 Pajero

Post by mitsubill »

Just got a new to me 91 Lwb 2.5 auto to replace my departed 95 and another 91... This new 91 has a 3 inch body lift and there is a problem with getting the drive selector to stay in 2 wheel HI, my first thought is that the body lift has caused a problem with the shift lever, could it be that because of the lift there is interference not allowing the shift lever to be pulled down into 2 wheel hi? Anyone have a similar problem?

I think you've nailed it. On the gen1's, we used to cut a relief in the shifter boot, and as long as the BL wasn't huge, it was usually enough. But at 3", I'd imagine you are probably hitting the cutout in the floorpan itself, but the only way to know for sure is to pull the console garnish, and any boots that are there, and shift through the entire range to check for contact. Sorry I can't give you more specifics, but my BL experience is limited to gen1 rigs. My gen2's didn't have body lifts. But I think you're on the right track.

Is the auto trans selector behaving itself? The linkage on those can usually be adjusted to compensate for the distance. Sounds like you bought it with the BL already installed? Not sure of your experience level, so you may have already done all this and more, but I'd check the brake lines too, to make sure they were taken care of properly, especially as the rear live axle goes through its travel. Also the fan shroud, if still in place should be relocated too, or extended... You've probably checked all this, but in case you haven't...

Thanks for the reply Phil, I am not having any problem with the trans shift selector and will check the brake lines to see if there is any stress on them, the right side cv boot(inner) is torn, don't know if the lift or just general use caused the tear... Love these rigs, got it at a price I could not refuse, the 3" lift with 265s looks good and would like to maintain but if the stress is too much I will remove the lift. There is no fan shroud, did the gen11 have shrouds? Can't remember from my previous Pajs. Again thanks for the reply..

I love em too! I am on number six. Not sure if I should be proud or embarrassed? Lol.

Body lift has no effect on CV boots. Your suspension can stay completely stock. But it's actually pretty amazing what you can fit on a stock gen2 with only a little bit of extra preload on the torsion bars. I ran 33s on my 91 shorty and my 93 LWB with no susp or bodylift at all.

A body lift is nice for getting the sheetmetal out of the way for sure, and doesn't really stress anything per se, but it does raise your center of gravity. You've had paj's before so you know how they feel. I'm guessing you can feel the difference with 3 inches of spacer between body and frame eh?

Yep, stock came with a shroud. Some folks modify the shroud, some simply make some mods to the way the rad mounts and relocate it back to where it used to sit relative to the engine, which is now sitting "lower" in the engine compartment.

These things are probably all taken care of, but it doesn't hurt to second guess right?

Love to see your rig. Any pics yet?

I did a 2" BL on my Mk2 and had to relieve the plastic console and remove the rubber boot for my T-case shifter to stay in 2WD. You may need to relieve the sheetmetal as well with the 3", but as Phil said, the only way to know for sure is to do a little digging.

Hi guys, sorry for delay in replies, too many projects, not enough time.....just finished putting my 88 Dodge Raider(re badged Mit Montero) back together, looks good even if I say so myself...rebuilt Mit 2.6, auto, new ACC carpet, now with 31 tires.....will post pics asap....the Paj is waiting patiently, cutting a notch from the floor-console solved the 4 wheel drive selector problem, it will now stay in 2wheel no problem, next is cv axles, finally found the proper set from the USA-ebay, then timing belt and water pump, have had the rad recored...was 80% plugged... may have been cheaper to buy new from China but was unsure of quality so just rebuilt.....will get the pics of the Raider soon..

Great to hear the update Bill! I had a 2.6 in my 88 Raider. Loved it, but... I still have nightmares about Mikuni vaccum lines, and I'm pretty sure I can still smell coolant... And I sold mine in 99. LOL.

But someone will say it, so it may as well be me: PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN. LOL.

Well just to show it does exist, really happy with the way it turned out, just waiting for collector plates for it and some nice weather then we will take it out and show it off..... now that the 88 is done I can get back to the 91 Paj, but now that I have seen that V55 of yours Phil, might set my eyes to wander, maybe if the exchange rate comes down a bit might have to start looking...lol
