96 4m40 crankshaft pulley moved forward

Post by Vasi »

HI folks
My name is vasi and i'm new around here. Need some advise with my 96 Pajero 2.8 diesel: couple days ago out of the blue a load grinding noise appeared while driving, pulled over and shut the engine off, took a look and it appeared that the cooling fan was rubbing against the crankshaft pulley. Drove the car back home(no more that 500m, i was very close to my house), parked it in the garage and after 2 days now i notice a small pool of oil underneath (2-3 inch wide). The leak on the floor is collected Wright where the engine meets the transmission. i looked underneath with a flash light but cant really say where its coming from.I have to say that the pajero didnt leaked a drop of oil prior to this.
My questions are : did i blew the engine? Why would the crankshaft pulley moved forward out of the blue like that ?
Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Vasi

Work done so far on the car: water pump, coolant flush, idler arm, pitman arm, front ball joints, front breaks and an unsuccessful wheel alignment at Kal tire in Langford

You need to replace the pulley it has separated and hopefully just the front seal behind the pulley . You can get the pulley from the states for around 65$ and the seal from Rocky Mountain , CVI ect. See recent post "Deli Hell" there are also very good posts on replacing the pulley , good luck .

Second on the pulley issue

The pulley assembly is a Harmonic Balancer (of sorts) and smooths out normal engine vibrations, but its odd you have an oil puddle as that means either the front cover has been damaged/cracked or the crankshaft pulley bolt is loose or missing which has allowed the pulley to back out of the front seal. If you have an oil leak you may have damaged the woodruff key which helps ensure torque is delivered to the pulley.

The pulley is made of 3 parts:
1) The inner part is bolted to the crankshaft and keeps oil in the crankcase at the front seal.
2) The outer part is the pulley.
3) The middle part is rubber and as the rubber ages it starts to crack and eventually releases from one or both metal parts.

When they go bad the engine shakes....lightly at first and as the rubber bond gets worse so do the vibrations....If left unchecked the pulley can shatter the clutch fan, ruin all the belts and in extreme cases take out your radiator.

pajero crank pulley is diff than delica
if you try it might have big problem with the crankshaft
then if the crankshaft is gone $ 4,000 for the complete engine
big money, used the right parts.
better buy the right parts for your delica than sorry
manual book say diff part number. I will not go to diff part number
they are 2 diff crankshaft pulley, I don't know even they are the same engine
timing chain cover is different,
cheers

Thank you all for your reply to my issue. There is not one drop of oil coming from the front of the engine(completely dry) where the pulley is situated. I can see that behind the pulley there is a round robber that's separated from the pulley itself. I can get pulley done but as far as the seal at the back of the engine as some of you mentioned(assuming that that is the cause of my oil leak) ...oh well i might just have to leave that to the mechanic( i think ill tow it up to Coombs at the folks at CCAUTO).
I just hope that nothing its damaged inside the engine(fingers crossed) If you have any more advice or info for please keep it coming!
Thanks again for ur help
Once i get it fixed i will post what the issues were and maybe total damage $$(that is if i don't have a heart attack when i get the bill)
