Northern BC

Post by josh »

I have been noticing many more delica's up around my neck of the woods (Smithers) and know of at least 5 within about a 4 hour radius of me... is it time we did a Northern Delica Meet?

Patty,

State the dates that you will be around, then we will set something up that will work out then. I know James and I are pretty flexible, and I have a hunch that Dylan will be up for it as well... I'll try to get ahold of everyone else to... we will have to figure out a fun ride also. It will be fun northern style!

Hi Josh!

This is Leah (and Dillon.) Definitely loving the new (well new to us) Delica. I think we've named it Thor. I'm sure we would be up for a northern excursion. I know I have weddings to do the first two weekends in August. Took it out to see my Dad yesterday and he was already making plans on how to put the winch on and build a roof rack for it. Pretty Stoked! (don't think I've ever been this giddy about a vehicle)

Leah,

I am pumped that you love it so much (I don't think the giddiness ever disappears!)... cant wait to see what you do to it! Anyhow, we will have to do a few outings soon... mine is getting fixed up starting this weekend.

So the first two weeks of August shall be stricken from the calender of possibilities... lets make this happen. Any ideas on a route to do?

Hey Josh and other Northerners,

For those of us near Smithers, we could go up on the Microwave area near Telkwa. It will take us right up into the alpine and should be some pretty nice views. That could be just a day trip.

Another options would be lava fields near Terrace. There is a way to drive close to the old cone, but when I tried it 13 years ago in my Saab I couldn't cross the water bars.

If we want to include our friends in Prince George and Quesnel a little easier we could back road it to PG or Fort St James. We will be running the Barge on Babine Lake twice a week in the summer (Monday and Friday) go across and take the logging roads around to Takla Lake, Leo Creek and Down to Ft St James.

Just a few thought. BTW, the first two weeks of June are out for me, but that is probably too early judging by the slow melt this cool spring.

James,

Great ideas, keep them coming. I think we will figure out a route when we see where everyone is coming from! May I suggest the first weekend in July as a tentative date for the meet?

Fellow Northerners,

I'm not sure where everyone is and what they have seen up here so I'll suggest the following:

Meet Terrace Friday July 4th and camp somewhere nearby. Saturday proceed to Nisga'a Mememorial Lava Fields Park. Camp Saturday in area. Visit cinder cone and other attractions. Sunday continue up Nass FSR to Cassiar Hwy (37) then down to Kitwanga and home from there (east or west). Details to be filled in. We could do the long weekend as another option to give more time.

Saturday proceed to Nisga'a Mememorial Lava Fields Park. Camp Saturday in area.
Just a note.. that weekend (July 4/5) is crabfest in Ginglox featuring Tom Cochrane and Glass Tiger (yes.. I said Glass Tiger :? ). I don't know who else is playing yet. Gingolx is situated 170 kilometers northwest of Terrace in the midst of the area that includes the Nisga'a Lava Beds. you can go to http://www.crabfest.ca for more info.

If it is the weekend before, we are out as I have a wedding to shoot in Blue River (Mike Wiegele Ski Resort- wahoo!)

I am heading North on Canada Day long weekend. So far I have a plan to leave North Van to Nanaimo-Tofino on Sunday June 29th and I have booked a ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert on July 3rd. Where to go next is up to me and my wife. We have 10 days to explore the region and we are open to any proposals. My personal goal is to take pictures and my wife is more interested in visiting cultural events. Crabfest looks great and we really want to see Nisga'a Lava Beds but this means we need to clone ourselves to go to Terrace or Smithers at the same time. Please advise.

Sergi,

Meet us in terrace on the 4th, and see the Nisga'a Lava Beds with us, and we can all catch crabfest if we want... I think that D+L, Docsavage, and I are all headed back to Smithers after that... so join us on that cruise as well. In the end you can see it all.

I guess I'll step up and pronounce the dates for the northern meet as July 4th, 5th, 6th... and on depending. Who's all coming?

As long as they aren't the itchy little crabs, I'm in on that!!!

I hope that you can make it up Profister, the more the merrier. I have a lot of room in my house if you want to stay in Houston for a bit as well. The fish should be in the river and the water clean by that time.

If we agree on the weekend as described and set the date now, I'll see if there is a group campsite to book, as the forestry ones may be full.

OK guys, everything sounds good for me but we arrive to Prince Rupert at 11:30 pm and I cannot imagine that my wife will leave town without visiting at least one museum. I have to work on a schedule to see what the time line is for July 4th. What is the driving time from PR to Terrace?

Sergiy,

It is about an hour half to two hours to Terrace from Rupert, so lots of time. I probably won't be able to get to Terrace till around 6 or 7 pm as I'll leave after work. That is why I think we should camp in the Terrace area the first night.
