Delica iPhone App

Post by nvanadm »

I did a quick search and didn't find anything on this topic yet.

I've been thinking about it for quite some time and would love to see a Delica iPhone App.

I know for a fact that there are enough smart people on this forum and possibly even a developer. I would do it except for two issues...not smart enough, and not a developer. :-D

I just thought it would make checking delica.ca easier on the go. It would be useful to be able to reference parts on a long trip, check your inbox or search the Wiki etc...

I know all of these things can be done just using Safari, but everything needs to be zoomed in on and with an App you wouldn't have to do that. Navigating through Delica.ca would be much easier on an App.

We could even use the MitsuMaple :M as our logo.

Just a thought...hopefully it will happen one day.

I'm an iPhone developer. I've worked with Palm OS and Brew, and have been looking for an excuse to play with Android. My Android Pride t shirt (lots of them in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYLs4NCgvNU) shipped yesterday. :-)

The main issue with delica.ca on iPhone et al is the wonky stylesheets that get doled out to the mobile version of Safari. The page loads, it starts to render correctly, then it all goes wrong and it looks terrible.

I don't have a problem viewing delica.ca on my iphone...everything looks exactly the same as it does on my PC...it's more that it's annoying to have to zoom in on everthing all the time. I just thought having an app would make things easier, look better and be more convienient when travelling. I really have no idea how it all works :-)

Its not an iphone problem, its a website problem. The site just needs to have stylesheets for iphone.

So an App uses the current site? Or would the info from this site need to be transferred to the created App and that's where the problem would be?
Like I said, no idea...just thought it would be cool.

Maybe we should create a new and improved delica.ca and App while we're at it...and by we I mean someone who knows what they're doing. :-D

Have you used the Safari web browser? You might have noticed that many sites have a specific layout for mobile device's small screens. Try Canadian Tire site, google, many many sites have mobile-oriented "skins".

A web browser identifies itself to the web server, and the server can in turn report to the web application to return a specific layout (stylesheet) for that browser/device. In fact, often it just redirects you to a different version of the site (e.g. mobile.thiswebsite.com or m.website.com) which shows the same content in a different layout.

Its up to the webmaster to develop the service for mobile browsers. It's not an iphone-specific problem, nor is an app the solution. Or you could say, you already have the app - Safari. :-)

While on the subject of Apps. If anyone is using an iPhone/iPad, I just found a pretty helpful App last night.

It's called "VW Diesel Locator". It will show you all the closest gas stations with diesel to your current location. Never run out of diesel again! It also shows the closest VW dealerships which may be helpful if you're in a real jam for a mechanic I guess.

This one only works in Canada, so if you need something while in the U.S. "Interstate Diesel Fuel" is also one to try.
