New member in Calgary

Post by Chris 80 »

Hi all. As the title says new member in Calgary looking at gathering as much insight before making a potential purchase of a van for adventures to the everyday hussle and bustle. Will be looking at a L400 model from my early guessing. Never had a diesel before but that is also what I am leaning towards except this current cold snap makes me wonder.

Anyways, feel free to shot me any newbie advice or trucks that could be available.

Welcome!

Your G wagon is awesome, and I haven't seen it. Big love. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you like good engineering if you have a G and want a Deli. That or practical 4x4s. If not, what's your draw?

L400 in winter: no. problem. I'm in Winnipeg, and have a pajero with a 4M40 (same motor)... I hardly plug it in, and it's totally ok with that. I like calling it a 'venerable' engine.

Yup. My L400 fired right up this morning at -28 being plugged in for an hour.
Very happy :)

-28 was not a problem in Leduc as well. I did plug it in all night though, as a precaution.

Typically I give 2.5-3 hrs. My timer came unplugged. Oh well.
I hope this cold snap goes to Florida.

well u have 2 option, the newer gen 2 has electronic injection pump.
the first generation L400 is mechanical.
the problem with the second generation is when the injection pump fail nobody knows how to do it for now.
even cvi and our local injection place Fred Holmes ,don't know how to fix it. as they don't have the spec for fred holmes.
as per CVI they don't have the machine to calibrate it for this electronic injection pump.
u can call them and inquire about this.
I have mind need to send overseas to make it work.
as they cannot do it over here without any guarantee.
as per mechanical pump they can do it here but not 100% perfect.
you have the choice which one you want.
cheers;

It sounds a little strange to me.
If 2nd gen IP has a problem, it is most likely sensors and probability is very low.
You can get them from Zexel or simply replace complete IP assy with other used one ( We recently replaced one unit for 1998 L400).
Delica shop has to stock them for better service. :-)

2nd Gen L400 has more horsepower , and drive very smoothly and powerful on the road.
And they are most updated model we can get from Japan and its auction price has been very hot in Japan.

If you have enough fund, I would say "go for 2nd L400 or 1st gen L400 with full service".

well,
second generation is updated one yes, it consist of electronic injection. if anything fail on that not easy to fix as u need a scanner.
I did have problem with gen 2 and takes time to fix it, I don't see anybody know how to fix this injection pump,
even fred holmes in Richmond they cannot guarantee on this that will work perfectly.
as I approach them and cost at least $1,200 expensive.
you can easy to fix the gen 2 if you have scanner and proper tools and spec for this.
I import some gen 2, but thru my experience not easy to fix if any problem occur.
Again its up to the customer which one they want. nothing against gen 2 delica but it just very hard to fix when problem occur.
I don't go again to electronic its just hard to fix and I don't know anybody who can fix the ecu and pump on this so far.
for me I try both when u have generation one AND GEN 2 , IF GEN 1 IS IN PERFECT CONDITION ITS GOOD.
depends on the tuning.
this is only my opinion as this is my bad experience for gen 2 injection pump.
gen 1 is easy to fix just my though.
cheers;

My gas L400 starts up without being plugged in! All week long! And it may go up for sale soon... if the right buyer comes along.
