IDI fuel pump

Post by dropnshred »

Hey Everyone,
Not yet a Deli-cious owner, but really want to be! Been searching for a while now and I think I'm close, I'm only wondering now if this rig can be converted to WVO. Been doing some homework on the topic and I know it needs to have an IDI diesel fuel pump to get this conversion going, so! my question is this: It's a 1997 delica L400 (spacegear) with a Turbocharged, intercooled 2.8 litre diesel, can anyone tell by this if it is an indirect injection fuel pump? if it is not, can i switch it out for one?
the more recent year has me skeptical that it does run an IDI but I seem to remember him saying something about glow plugs in it which leads me to believe it is....? Anything I've read thus far says they ran IDI's until early 90's.
The rig itself is in great shape, i do like it but i love the idea of WVO Delicas and minimizing my eco footprint more. any light that can be shed on this would be much appreciated!
THANKS GUYS! GALS!

I believe all 4M40 engines are mechanical indirect injection by Bosch VE style pump- VE mechanically controlled (accelerator cable) until 1996, VE-EDC fly by wire afterwards.

The larger 3.2l 4M41 was upgraded to common-rail direct injection, but not the 4M40.

Not sure how the EDC fuel pumps cope with WVO, but googling "Bosch VE EDC WVO" should (might) bring up some relevant results.

Awh sweet thanks man! So then it would still actually be an IDI, just electric past 96? sounds like the only major concern on an EDC is that the WVO needs to be clean and free of any water... sounds reasonable.
Are you familiar with WVO conversions? have you heard of any issues otherwise of running WVO?

You've got it, all 4M40's are IDI. No common-rail direct injection malarkey involved.

I have no practical experience with WVO conversions, but I believe on the VE-EDC engines they increased injection pressures over the mechanically controlled VE pumps, which would presumably require very clean WVO (but not as clean as Direct Injection, which has even higher fuel pressures).
